Ford announces return to Formula One for 2026, partners with Red Bull

NEW YORK -- Ford has confirmed it will return to Formula One in 2026 as it joins forces with world champions Red Bull.

The American automotive giant announced its return to the sport on Friday morning at Red Bull's launch event in New York.

The deal will see Ford team up with Red Bull's recently formed engine company, Red Bull Powertrains, which is based at the F1 team's factory in Milton Keynes, England, and is already working on a power unit to meet F1's new engine regulations for 2026.

@2lto+1l0BkTj1 The powertrain will be developed by Red Bull powertrains (which has a lot of former Honda people in their ranks). Ford won't be starting from zero.

@1ekx Sustainable? Are you kidding me? Honda, Mercedes and Ferrari have been in this sport for many many years and developed intricate knowledge. Anytime a new guy comes into this game, they are at the beginning of the learning curve and fall to the back of the pack for season after season. We arent even in Indy car and that form of racing is a fraction of the cost and prestige of F1. This might make sense if we had money to p!ss away, but we are barely scraping by. We should be concentrating on fixing problems on recalls first, not throwing away tons of cash on a folly that will make us look foolish for years.

I would prefer to see Doug Field's statement on this first, but due to the electrification and software knowledge that can be learned, I believe this endeavor is sustainable for Ford.

Seems like a peculiar move considering all the messaging about cutting costs. I would prefer to have some of our technical specialists back instead of our name on the side of an F1 car.

If we build engines like we build trucks and EV”s, we won’t ever finish a race.

Where will we hold the cars while we wait for chips?

We have 100 billion in debt and its rated as junk. Another 30, 40 million a year for F1 wont even be noticed. We can make that up by getting rid of some more of those pesky engineers and IT people. We can deal with warranty costs by going from 3 year 30,000 to 10 days and/or 10 miles. Viola! problem solved.

The announcement was cringworthy. Less than 24 hours after admitting to investors that he badly mismanaged the company last year Farley rolls out onstage in his big boy race car to proudly announce that the company will be lighting another $1 billion on fire so he can once again show the world that he's a car guy. He is completely out of control.

What is Ford bringing to the party other than money and what is the perceived benefit of this joint venture? The last foray into F1, Stewart/Ford racing did not fare well. The glory days were with Cosworth and Lotus and that is long gone. I had to laugh when the news caster said that Ford won 10 F1 constructors cups, no that was Lotus. Ford did not build F1 chassis.

How many ICE jobs need to be eliminated to fund this?

When did F1 agree to go EV?

Too stupid for words.

Remember Farley thinks he is a skilled and accomplished race car driver. Why not get the Company to pay for your "passions." Huge waste of money just to fluff his ego.

Because we lost $2,000,000,000 in 2022, we will plan to spend more money on stuff that doesn’t fix our problems.
