Thread regarding NetApp layoffs

This isn't right

Younger hires are coming in, older ones are going out. And the exits don't look like performance issues. It's a shame how little this place cares about institutional knowledge.

It's a he-l of a lot easier for them to manipulate and over work a 20 year old compared to a 50 year old.

@f3 And yet we still see plenty of expensive and useless people still employed because they are buddies with someone and play the politics. It stinks

On top of AI brain rot, companies are proactively obliterating every trace of organizational knowledge they managed to accrue, by annual waves of mass layoffs targeting the most tenured (expensive) people. That is exactly what we are seeing at NetApp.

@d5 when I was in high school, a buddy's mom looked me straight in the eyes one day when I was bi--hing about one unfairness or another that had been bestowed upon me and said, "No one ever said life was going to be fait." and that has stuck with me this entire time.

@dh The decisions are made by people who are totally detached from the business and reality, and the selection is not based on merit or even legal grounds. Age and favoritism certainly play a big part. I don’t believe it’s just random. And the manner in which they do the layoffs is shameful. This place is rotten to the core.

I am not sure its age related.... in the last round of layoffs, at least in my org, we lost around 40 people in about and equal distribution of older/younger, long-time/recent hires, stellar performers/needs improvement, even (for once) US/India based. It felt more like drawing names out of a hat than anything else. The gaps that especially the MTS5s left were immense, so I do agree there does not seem to be any care taken with respect to institutional knowledge.

As for finding new jobs the market is sh-t for everyone, although I have heard if anything its the early career folks who can be replaced by AI who have the most difficult time finding something new.

This is one of the hardest lessons. As a kid you maybe thought that fairness comes with adulthood, it doesn’t.

Unfortunately, that is the way of the world. It's happening everywhere. You served your time and did well, but everyone has their day.

@OP blatant age discrimination and people are letting the company get away with it
