Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Did anyone else see this on Facebook?

SAS is having an event for retirees, weeks after the company-wide celebration, to which we were not invited. Much of the success of SAS is due to the great work of retirees. If we come to said event, we have to pay for our own lunch! Seriously!?! We get to listen to stuff about the latest stuff that ki-led the goose that laid the golden egg, and after all we did, they won't even spring for lunch for us?!? In contrast, there is a mid-October event, independent of SAS, for retirees. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2885607674835420/posts/27527959706840208 I think I will attend the latter. Hope to see you there. I'm sure SAS only cares about the present and the unfortunately bleak future, but shouldn't they have some respect for those that contributed to their early success?

I know a few people who were forcibly retired, but none due to incompetence. On the contrary, incompetence has long been tolerated at SAS; that's a source of its problems.

As @a1 says, our contributions were bought and paid for. We took the deal, and it was considered a good deal at the time. SAS does not owe us a free lunch.

For the 50th anniversary, it would have been gracious to invite all the retirees. The only ones I know who were invited were high managers -- and they would agree that others made greater contributions.

I'm not on Facebook, but I've been to other retiree gatherings at SAS. In large groups, whom you'll sit with is unpredictable. But there are usually a few people you know, and it's good to see old friends.

Sounds like a bunch of retirees having their own party for themselves no? That's different than SAS having a party for them.

The "retirees" I know were mostly forcibly retired due to incompetence, so there's that. It's really awesome for morale knowing these jokers got an extra year of salary way out when they were let go for not performing.

No. That success was bought and paid for.
