If you're new to the company and get laid off, do you still receive a severance package? Or do you have to be here for a certain amount of time?

@a3 this is the answer
If you are new, bet out while you are still marketable.
OT wont lay off if you are on probation. Yeah OT is not great these days, but they havent reached a low touching new pps after hiring 3 months back.
Are you worried.. you should be ok
Yeah it is an absolute disgrace. I have been made "redundant" twice outside of OT and both times there was 3 to 6 months severance. Here it seems to be statutory.
Go to an employment lawyer. Also do a search for "severance pay calculator in Ontario", as an example. It takes all things into account like age, years of service, role etc.
@a3 assuming severace, yes it's this.
If you're still in the probationary period any severance may be a nicety. You contract may have it specified though.
If you’re brand new, you’re likely to receive two weeks of severance (a two week non-working “notice” period). Beyond that, it’s one week of severance for each year of service up to ten years, unless your country’s laws or your contract dictate otherwise. I don’t think any rank-and-filers get more than 12 weeks total, even if they’ve been here for 25 years.
