IBM's Rank - WSJ - The 2026 Best Companies for the Future

The Wall Street Journal evaluates how leading US corps stack up in 6 areas: AI readiness, innovation, talent readiness, financial fitness, resilience and agility.

IBM ranks #19 overall with an Overall Score of 68.2, placing it 6th out of 31 companies in Software & Services. Its strengths are substantial: AI Rank #11, Innovation #21, Talent Readiness #42, and Resilience #30. This is a much stronger future-readiness profile than IBM often receives in casual market narratives.

The weaknesses are Financial Fitness #242 and Agility #258, which keep IBM below the most balanced software leaders. The data suggests IBM has real strategic credibility in AI, enterprise software, and resilience, but still carries legacy complexity. In analyst terms, IBM screens as a credible AI and enterprise infrastructure repositioning story, but not yet as a fully agile compounder.

@gm No the stock lost value because of some buffoon at IBM who wanted to demonstrate his AI thought leadership by releasing a global study on June 17 that found that 91% of enterprise executives do not fully understand their own AI dependencies and feel trapped in systems they cannot easily change. It backfired.

Had this article by WSJ not been published, IBM stock would have tanked even further.

@g6 Are these polls created by the same people who create internal employee surveys that are useless at best?

Stock dropped right after this announcement! Did it drop because of this announcement?

@g5 If Mr. Gerstner "tore IBM apart," then why does IBM still exist 30+ years later while many of its competitors from that era are gone or shadows of their former selves?

When he arrived, IBM was losing billions and analysts were discussing whether the company should be broken up. When he left, IBM was profitable, growing, and relevant again.

You don't have to like every decision he made, but rewriting history doesn't change it.

Pay to Play. IBM spends millions per year with vacuous AI, hybrid cloud, Quantum drivel ads in WSJ and SUPRISE! IBM gets high ranked in worthless WSJ polls. IBM PCjr and OS/2. Nuff said.

@g1 basement dwelling IBM troll learn how to spell and spell check or IBM will take back those 70 worthless badges you brag about in every post and knock you down to band 6 where you will troll for eternity. Gersner did not exist. It was Gerstner who forever tore IBM apart and left with over $400,000,000.

@f8

Mr Gersner was a man of honor and integrity. He saved IBM

@f8 As did my lovely post about how I embrace theft as retribution at IBM. What a shame.

They can take pride in accounting gimmicks and quantum promises to keep the mirage going.

IBM doesn't get the same attention as the AI high-flyers, but a #19 overall ranking and #11 in AI readiness from the WSJ suggests it's much better positioned for the future than many casual commentators assume. I am grateful that Arvind is our CEO and he is making Mr Gerstner proud. Mr Gerstner is smiling down upon IBM

Yea this readiness is just us saying yes to everything but can we actually produce? Very big difference. Is this another article we paid for?

@OP - Talent Readiness #42 ? Too bad Talent Rejection was not a criteria, IBM would have scored the top spot based on its track record of using innovative ways of ki-ling jobs.
