Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Voluntary Separation Program - Centene

Why aren't any of the CEO's who make millions and millions of dollars a year taking the VSP and being transparent about it?

I know a lot of people are worried about unemployment with VSP vs layoff ...

Even though you “voluntarily” leave, most states treat certain buyouts like layoffs if:

  • The employer is clearly reducing workforce (RIF, restructuring, downsizing)
  • You were given the option to leave or risk being laid off anyway
  • The program is part of a company-initiated separation plan (like Centene’s VSP)

👉 In these cases, states often consider it “no fault of your own”, which is the key requirement for unemployment.

One nuance to be aware of
Even with a layoff, your benefits can be affected by:

  • Severance pay -Some states delay benefits while severance is being “paid out”
  • PTO payout - Usually not disqualifying, but can affect timing
