I'm new here and I'd really like to know if this is really an expectation?

Yes, it is. As someone who used to be hourly at the company. It is expected to work over time, if not then you are not viewed as a team player. Take the overtime, we can all use the extra money.
Are you hourly? If so, you should be paid overtime if you work over 40 hours.
@OP you are looking at a maximum of 80 hours per week.
