Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Stop working hard

This place hates you. Why would you break your own back for them? You're certainly not the one benefiting from your extra work.

The official motto is "Work Hard and Have Fun." Want to spend all day coffee chatting and presenting PowerPoints? That's work.
Want to disappear into data mining, spreadsheets, coding, etc.? That's work too.
Long lunches? Vendor lunches? Micro-breaks? Career training? Team-building exercises? Strategic alignment sessions? Apparently all work. Executives have made it abundantly clear that output is optional, but attendance is mandatory. If H-1Bs, outsourcing, contractors, msps, and random people with no discernible skills can supposedly do the same job, then it seems the actual work was never the point.
At this stage, just show up, don't harass anyone, dress appropriately, wear deodorant, and occasionally nod during meetings. Everything else appears to be a matter of personal expression. Work hard. Have fun. Define both however you like.

You can work hard or work not very hard, or maybe don’t work at all… in the end, it doesn’t matter because the metrics that measure your success are broken. I can say one thing, I see people lie to themselves here - saying “oh, but I work hard for me, I learn new things bla bla” - it doesn’t matter folks, what matters is survivability and adaptability. There are plenty lazy workers here but they create perception and visibility of hard work very well, and that’s what matters.

@OP I've never understood the assumption that working hard means you're doing it for the company. I do it for me. The busier I am, the faster the day goes and the fewer awkward conversations I have to navigate.
Some people socialize. I troubleshoot.
We're all just trying to survive the day. To each their own. I'm not a workaholic. I'm just an introvert with a defensive strategy.

Honestly, I actually like the work. good or bad, I get so absorbed I don’t even notice time passing. What exhausts me isn’t the job itself, it’s the fact that being myself is treated as ‘not standard’ and comes with consequences. Wearing a mask every single day just to fit corporate version of acceptable isn’t easy

Seems like everyone is encouraging others to leave, but honestly, how is that any different from throwing someone else under the bus just so you can survive one more year? This sh-t show will keep going with or without you. Even if every employee walked out today, there are plenty of hungry people out there ready to replace them. That’s the reality. Find somewhere that fits you the best.
