Thread regarding Optum layoffs

AI will be replaced soon, but not by us

With token pricing increasing dramatically, AI solutions are going to be too expensive. We'll end up using real AI - another Indian.

Exactly this. CEOs are finally realizing that the moment AI stops being subsidized through subscription, its cost becomes way too high to justify. So they'll go back to the previous solution, which will be more outsourcing. Either way, we're the ones getting sc--wed.

The problem is, the executives will drive this company into the ground before admitting that the investments they made into AI were a bad decision. They have ki-led many many teams to replace their software with “AI” projects. Teams have been ki-led before and AI solution was even built to replace their software or task. They did a lot of firing based on speculation and now they are going to have to live with it even if that means the new software is terrible or more expensive.

Like @op mentioned it is a lose lose situation for employees. Either AI is a huge success and replaces our jobs, or the more likely case is AI is over hyped and not a good solution for 90% of the things they try to make us shove it into. When they finally find that it is too expensive or not giving them the returns they promised, they will have to either double down and blame the employees for not implementing it correctly, or start closing down the projects they themselves spun up, laying off more people and continuing to replace them with offshore workers to cut cost.

Either way, if you haven’t been already please start looking for new places to work.

AI has been overhyped, outstandingly so. Leaders saw it as super-effective because it automated the super easy tasks they have to do. Writing. They spend trillions of tokens on writing LinkedIn slop, making dogshit powerpoints, polluting our email inboxes. Writing something is as easy as it gets (not easy for them, though; the moment they stop using AI they type in the most broken grammar imaginable).

But it's only decent at anything complicated. It needs a fair amount of human expert oversight.

Fully offshored labor won't work out, either. It will destroy the business.

Offshored engineers don't engineer. Offshore customer support doesn't support. Offshore processors won't process. They need a script to follow, a really strict script to follow. And then they'll do it at 1/3rd the pace of any highly regarded high-school graduate who just picked up the role.
