Because 99.9% of the Nike employees that are rightfully issued a Performance Improvement Plan are going to flunk it. Then Nike can fire them rather than issuing a layoff notice then paying unemployment benefits.

People managers are lazy and don’t want to go through the effort of creating PIPs.
Just DON’T speak up and you will remain safe. It’s like being the teachers pet. The most unethical ones are actually the ones that survive.
A lot of the layoffs were folks that would have crushed a PIP. The people left standing are the ones that need PIPs and would fail. They layoff the wrong people 80% of the time. Look around you. Who do you see? High performers? Because I don’t.
No, Nike uses layoffs to manage out poor performing employees so they can avoid the difficult conversations. Then those same "needs improvement' teammates reapply to Nike and get re-hired! Like wtf!!!
