Any insight on what's cooking?
Pretty clear that there is no need for Project Managers anymore, and that they are rapidly phased out, together with the Portfolio Manager level of directors.
Feels like the operations side will be on the front burner, with focus on finding areas that can be made more efficient (i.e., layoffs).
The goal is to have about 15 PMs left across the company 2-3 years from now. They will be leading large cross-enterprise efforts.
The rest? Laid off, retired, transitioned to RTE roles.
And, BTW, the 15 will be sourced mainly from current Directors with PM experience.
If you are not sure you will be among the 15, have a backup plan. You have been warned!
Schwab has been getting rid of project managers for decades. They just assigned a new PM to the effort.
Good luck functioning without Project Managers.
@cg There are already RTEs and ScrumMasters that are responsible for cross-team coordination. That people are supposed to move Jira tickets etc.is a poor argument for having PMs. Get people to do the work they are supposed to do instead! Solve the root cause problem, do not patch it with PMs. Same thing with portfolio managers. Have the POs do their work. Let the SAFe model do its work!!
It makes no sense to me why people think project/portfolio managers are not needed? They do all the people-related stuff that AI will never be able to replace. I know that’s not the perception of leaders, but most coders don’t want to move JIRA tickets, negotiate priorities and assess risks… and those things are MORE important in our AI future.
As for BOET, certainly the leader must have done well reducing CS&S that way, and the company has finally realized that tech is the king of the heap. They will try to cut things, but there will be a lot of processes that will be stubbornly difficult to automate. We shall see…
