Coaching Plan

I was just informed that it’s being recommended that I be placed on a coaching plan. I wanted to better understand the expectations and implications of this process. Specifically, should I view this as developmental support, or does failure to meet the outlined metrics potentially put my employment at risk?

@w2 Oh, sweet summer child.

I've personally seen some of the best in the organisation being put on coaching plans/PIPs, and I've seen blanket requests forcing managers to put the "bottom 10%", even if everyone is doing perfectly fine, on coaching plans.

I'm sure(?) there are some legitimate cases, but for the most part it's just yet another tool to force people out.

Legitimate reason or not. Lets face the curtains: you're fu---d if you're put on one these days. Never seen a single person being put on one and still be around 6 months later. Tick tock.

A coaching plan means that you are fu--ing up somehow and they are going to put you on a pip if you dont get it together. Mgmt has no say so in these and cant even fight leadership anymore. My suggestion is to figure out where you are dropping the ball and fix it before next Q.

@kd That is originally what PIPs were supposed to be, but in most cases at most companies PIPs are used as a tool to get rid of people. When I was put on a PIP every single kpi goal I was given was double or more than the team's top performer. When I pointed this out I was told it is what it is and if I really wanted keep my job I'd "figure out a way to hit those numbers" I landed a new job a couple weeks later but kept doing less than the bare minimum for dell and collected 2 paychecks for a couple months.

I beg to differ. PIPs are there to help you. They exhibit your flaws and give you the opportunity to correct them, demonstrating to your management team that your are not just a useless seat warming slug, but actually someone with skills and a solid work ethic who is open to being coached for your own personal growth and success in your career. Welcome the coaching plan or PIP with open arms and enthusiasm... you will be a better person after it.

@OP "Coaching Plan" is a disingenuous way of saying they want to put you on a PIP Plan, which is a disengenious way of saying they want you to leave on your own so they don't have to pay severance, which is a disengenious way of saying you will no longer be an employee at Dell one way or the other. Just speaking truth.

If your team is ran like mine in ush support then the coaching plan us a precursor to a PIP that is a precursor to termination.

If "Coaching plan" = PIP then start looking.

While I'm sure the original intent for whenever a PIP was invented was to improve things, as with any other good things it's turned into pure sh-t at Dell and it's basically just a way to make life miserable enough for people to quit themselves and avoid having to pay severance.

If it's a PIP, your days are probably numbered already. Do the bare minimum of what's being asked and utilize the rest of the time to look for something else.
