Whatever It Takes: Inside the eBay Scandal

Has anyone heard about the whole eBay harassment/stalking case against Ina and David Steiner? I’m honestly surprised we don’t already have a documentary over stuff from here, especially considering the automotive crossover. The story is completely insane. Executives and leadership allegedly sending creepy packages, surveillance, threats, and harassment over criticism in a newsletter.

I also learned that former eBay CEO Devin Wenig was elected to the board of General Motors in 2018 and remained there even after the stalking scandal became public. Feels like the kind of bizarre corporate story you would expect out of Silicon Valley or Oakland startup culture, not something involving a Fortune 500 company.

Why don’t we just replace HR with AI, it would be wise and impartial….

This case seems so bizarre. Why would ebay executives care so much about what some d-mb couple in Massachusetts wrote on their blog in 2019? I could see if it happened in the 90s when ebay was just starting out and they wanted to silence all criticism of a fledgling company but ebay was well established by 2019. It just doesn't make sense.

Life is lived based on shared imperfections and growth. Nothing is perfect, far from it, but we can grow, learn and thrive despite what grievances we have.

@c2 You may be the one that needs to see a therapist if you're talking about "minor workplace drama" after the last couple years....

@bb and @b7 totally agree. There are pockets of crazy levels of harassment and bullying within Ford. It nearly always is some “connected” individual who is the ring leader. “Connected” = family member/close friend/lover is a LL and they feel protected. That individual feels threatened by competent skilled coworkers so they start whisper campaigns to sabotage their careers. They recruit minions to join in on the mobbing with the promise of special treatment via their connections.

I watched a female whose husband was a LL4 cow an entire department for 20+ years. She serially ran off / set up people to get fired all because they actually did their jobs well. She really had it in for another female who was promoted to tech spec LL6. She regularly tried to sabotage her work and to get her fired. It infuriated her that she couldn’t get the tech spec LL6 fired. She foamed at the mouth every time the tech spec LL6 got accolades. When the tech spec LL6 left Ford the psycho woman tried unsuccessfully to get her new employer to fire her. The psycho bragged about her activities.

It’s scary the lengths some people will go to AND the amount of misbehaviors ford leadership will cover up. The above female had many HR reports against her and it always ended up that the victim left Ford due to severe retaliation.

@12s Leave him alone. He is not the problem; the real issue is management's inability to distinguish between mental health or emotional concerns and legitimate safety issues.

@g6 Before you question validity, go ask Oakland University about their involvement.

Anyone trying to draw parallels between what amounts to gangstalking and mildly annoying workplace drama at Ford needs.to go see a therapist and sort their life out.

Don't care about ebay, but how about our Ford hr and management with their top secret unprintable, unforwardable, unsaveable termination threats for being sick 1 day more than your RTO limit allows??? How about that?

BTW, has anyone gotten one of those emails lately? The lawyers may be interested.

@b7 I agree this workplace is toxic and full of drama. I’m not blaming specific people, but I don’t understand why anyone wants to participate in all the negativity. People should be able to just do their jobs and get recognized for good work without getting dragged into all this chaos. Why is this place so cringe?

@aa you might be in a decent area of Ford, but some teams have a culture of harassment, immature behavior, retaliation, and similar things do happen here. This company is full of sleaze in some places. I hope it never happens to you but if it does, don’t say you weren’t warned.

What in the world does this have to do with Ford?

@a2 "Internal messages reportedly included phrases like "take her down" and "we are going to crush this lady" referring to Ina Steiner. There was also discussion of gathering background information ("dossier-building") and digging into details about the Steiners. However, publicly known court records and charges focus on harassment and surveillance directed at David and Ina Steiner themselves."

I didn’t know eBay had loyalists like that. Did they hack the Steiners’ parents’ phones or something crazy like that too? This feels like something out of a small-town Texas oil feud.

The real twist was how far the "internal culture" thing scaled before anyone outside realized how deep it went.

eBay investigated themselves and, after a thorough review, concluded that eBay did not, in fact, do anything wrong.

  • sent live spiders and cockroaches to their home
  • mailed a bloody pig mask and a pig fetus Halloween mask
  • sent a funeral wreath and books about coping with a spouse’s death
  • posted fake Craigslist ads using the Steiners’ address, including escort or s-x-related ads
  • ordered unwanted deliveries like pizza, magazines, and po-nographic material
  • created fake social media accounts to harass, threaten, and mock them
  • conducted physical surveillance around their home in Massachusetts
  • followed them in rental cars to track their movements
  • discussed plans to install a GPS tracker on their car
  • planned a break-in to place a tracking device in their garage

The case became a major scandal because multiple eBay employees were later convicted or pleaded guilty, and it raised serious questions about corporate culture and leadership accountability.
