I'm the only person cut from my entire group, and when I asked my manager why, he couldn't give me an answer. He told me I was a top performer, that my skills were exactly what the project needed, and that the project itself is a priority. None of it adds up, and I don't understand why this happened.

Sorry to hear! Same thing happened to me. Was told I was a top performer but was also let go.
I heard the decision was made at the very senior levels of leadership, your manager likely had no say in the matter
I feel this company is going downwards fast. Does anyone know if there is an option to opt in to this layoff?
A little advice is to not spend too much time trying to make sense of these things. There are no good reasons, there a thousand little reasons why someone gets picked. It will never make sense and it doesn't matter. This is happening to a lot of good professionals. Don't take it personally. Do what you need to do to get through the feelings, and quickly shift your perspective to gratitude for the opportunity and the growth you enjoyed. Make THAT your story and move on. They got to decide to lay you off, you get to own the narrative from here.
I am sorry you’re going through this. It’s easy to say “it’s business, not personal,” but the fact is it sure feels personal.
