Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

What are the biggest lessons employment has taught you?

Efficient workers got punished with more work.

You will never get paid what you’re worth.

The exploitative people in charge are paid for their cruelty.

People who don’t care are the happiest at their job.

Peter Gibbons: The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.
Bob Porter: Don't... don't care?
Peter Gibbons: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my a-s off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime; so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon?
Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.
Bob Slydell: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

If you leave because you have found something else, retire, paid off, sacked. Someone else will step in and it will all go on as if you were never there.

The best thing you can do is make sure your in a position that if any of the above happened you will be ok

Don't get stressed it's just a job, not your ife and one of the above happens to everyone at some point

From Dell specifically I'd say two things in particular:

  1. How well you succeed has nothing to do with how good you are at your job. It's all about who you know, and who they know. Being great will only get you so far.
  2. If you actually are good at your job, you'll outperform 99% of the rest even by just doing the bare minimum. A lot of people don't have a clue about what they're doing (this one can be applied to many other jobs and life overall)

@am LOL OKC and RR buildings have many people doing little to no real work and still getting paid.

You are literally JUST a badge number in an excel spreadsheet. Easily deleted.

Middle management is the only leadership level who cares about employees because their directs are the ones who make them look good/bad.

Upper management has no interest in what's best for employees or the company, so long as it makes THEM more money.

@OP Leadership is rarely held accountable for their gross incompetence and countless failures, especially at Dell.
