Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Age discrimination is real at Medtronic

Once you hit a certain age, they start looking for reasons to push you out. I've seen it happen to three people in my team. They treat older workers like garbage.

@b0

  1. People who question the assumptions of the decision makers, based on actual data, get excluded.

I think it depends on the Operating Unit that you are in. In Structural Heart, at the Santa Rosa site, they definitely seem to limit what the older people are allowed to do and they are the first to go during lay-offs.

In my previous OU everything was great, then after the 2023 lay-offs I was transfered to SH where I have had younger mentees, that I recommended, hired at a higher level than I had been at for many years and then I was let go after I got them successfully on-boarded.

Should delete the mayo reference. Your cadence is distinctive. The non-physician data science and clinical sw pool is small and talks.

@b7 I have to wonder if your problem wasn’t age discrimination but perhaps your approach to issues and people at work.

I don’t see ageism. I feel mdt protects its employees pretty well in that regard. Move to consumer tech and then you’ll see ageism.

Age discrimination is sometimes a thing, but it is likely not a majority.

There are three main types I would anticipate seeing:

  1. Those without a seat due to funding cuts
  2. Those who under perform
  3. Those who are honest or outspoken and pose a threat (or are perceived as a threat) to others above them

Essentially, the old guard - the straight talkers with old school mentality that do not “fall in line”, the ones who drove the company to be what it is (or was). They will soon be gone. AI is coming.

Best wishes to all who will be impacted. Just remember, it is not the end, it is the start of a new journey. Also best of luck to those who remain, it is likely your jobs will be harder, with less rewards, and less incentive. Be positive, be a good human, keep serving people.

@OP It’s true. I am treated like the fossil nobody wants at the party. My refusal to partake in ERG, DEI events, or pronouns in my signature puts a spotlight on me, not in a good way, even though I meet all deliverables.

This isn't a surprise. Before age 35 you aren't taken seriously (especially without a spouse or kids) and after 50 you're pushed out. Especially in the med space.
