@dy sorry to hear. Godspeed
Have the “business meeting” a minute ago and was laid off. Normal package, 2 months pay upfront/2 weeks per year and 2 months of health insurance. CAS division, which I would recommend avoiding. Good luck to all
AI has been horrible for my role. It often hallucinates.
Got the business update meeting. It was my manager who got cut.
From a function under GOSC.
@b6 I had a couple of directors tell me that. Both left and found new jobs before they were targeted for the "great flattening" of the management chain. I can think of mid-level managers who will likely be scaled back by adoption of AI. That can also hit HR. It seems like directors at Medtronic were often on the verge of a heart attack when I looked back. It's an unfair role.
As for me, that "AI BIOMED GUY" who has likely gotten a wide spectrum of comments I never read, I figured out how to get back into great healthcare work that combines engineering, allied health, and AI. I know the niche area. I won't reveal though. I've got it on my sights. It's a highly unorthodox but "AI-backed" role that merges multiple fields within a research hospital. They can't outsource it to India.
Meanwhile, I use AI daily to fix defects, write tests, and analyze markup files for AI agents. I'm really deep into the AI usage in IT. You should try it if you haven't already. It might save your job.
@bg or hire on elsewhere!
@b1 Thank you, this is good to know. I have 16 years of service, so with the 2 months, that will bring me at around 10 months pay.
If I returned to a different role, I would lose the severance I believe. But I could pad another year as a contractor if needed and the package would not be affected. I’ll probably just coast into retirement now however.
Yeah I got one business update meeting with my whole team almost 3 years ago from my skip.
Turned out they RIFed our manager and the director just plainly told us we are good for now.
It is possible to get the business update meeting invite and you’re not being RIF’d. It could be that your role is changing or the location of your role will change. In those cases you’ll have the option to take the change or take the severance package.
@b1 You are correct. Severance packages are usually better than the ERT packages. The people I know who have taken the ERT offers are usually about to file their retirement paperwork anyways.
@aw I’ve gotten the ERT offer before and I believe the severance pkg may be a better deal if ur close to retiring. Under ERT they offer extra years to service or your age plus a lame bump for medical coverage. If you’ve got 2.5 yrs left, consider this cash payout a windfall to invest or use to glide into retirement like you planned.
Conference rooms are being booked for tomorrow for GOSC. Those in CM/OEM should be on the list. The VP and their sr directors just travels everywhere in business class for nothing. This group is a cult and it’s toxic - brown nosing each other!
Got the lone invite for tomorrow too
Is MDT not offering ERT this year? In past years I remember them starting with that to see how may people the could clear out, and then they moved to RIF to meet their headcount numbers.
I got the Business update invite for tomorrow and am 2.5 years from retirement. That would have been a nice option.
Just got the invite too along with a majority of our team. All individual emails though
@ab I did not know before hand. He had only recently moved to my team, within the last six months, and my boss was also RIFed, so the invite came from my boss' boss and I was told about both RIFs.
@a4 I was RIFd a few years ago. It was a scheduled 1:1 with my boss but when I dialed in, an HR person was also attending.
@OP When I got RIFd with my entire team, everyone including the manager got their own meeting notice "Business Update" but the manager did not get RIFd.
@ad+1
Its never a good email, basically your getting RIF, unless it from your direct manager then it could be anything.
@a5 They will both be on the call when you arrive. Then the director will read a script.
@a2 There was no message in the invite!
@OP I just got a "Business update" meeting invite from my boss for early tomorrow morning. No other people on the invite. Is it going to be bad news?
@ab sometimes you don't - depending on how big and how important there are sometimes NDAs and they keep it higher up the chain than the actual person's manager.
@a4 you didn't know your direct report was going to be/was RIF?
@a8 Often your manager will not know. Usually RIF decisions are made two or three levels up from the individual contributors, at least with the RIFs i have had a front row seat to.
If we get RIF, did our bosses know ahead of time? Anyone know?
Every time our team has had a layoff, the rest of us always get a mandatory business update email, but it goes to the whole team and the manager or director has always said in the email that things are all clear.
If you get a business update email with only you, or you and HR, it is probably a RIF.
@a5 is this a meeting invite you got today for the meeting to occur tomorrow?
I also received the business update invite. It's just me. I would assume HR will also hop on the call once I get the news.
Three months ago, I got one a "Business update" email and I was NOT RIFed, but my boss (a director) and a direct report of mine were being RIFed. That's how I found out, from my boss' boss.
(I was the only person on the call. No one from HR. If you see someone from HR on the invite, I would assume it's a RIF. I'm not sure if they show up as an invitee ... someone else might know)
@OP was it just to you or your entire team (possibly missing 1 or 2 individuals)?
Was there any message in the meeting invite?
Yes, but my manager was RIF’d
