Is it true that at Google employees over 50 are viewed as not being in touch with technology and thus, forced out or laid off? I’ve heard this affects women more.

yes - this is happening - ageism is real - even in Google.
I am over 50 / FTE / IC and I am seeing this behavior - obviously not flagrant, cloaked in various meeting exclusions, non-verbal responses. SWEs look/react different when they see a gray-haird specialist; line managers also see you as a threat...

I was hired at 58, and was being put up for promo (unsuccessful) at 62. As an FTE Individual contributor. You need to maintain a certain level of performance, and age does not matter.
Every company with engineers over 50 is doomed to perish.
Only Gen Z can save companies from decline.
