Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

The best advice I sadly ignored

I heard someone say this three years ago, but I didn't listen. I thought things might improve. Instead, they got worse. Now, I've been here five years too long. So let me say it to you now - if you can leave, leave. Take a pay cut if you have to. Move cities if you can. Just get out.

I took the early retirement. I don't regret it for a second. My health was suffering in the worst way. I could see the direction of things and would express my concern to my direct supervisor, and it was constant placating...no, it's all fine, I was told. I see what has happened since I left, and I'm glad I got out when I did. So glad. I was scared, I shed a few tears over leaving a job I've had for 20 years, but no regrets on that. Wish I'd had the income longer, but I did plan and was throwing tons at my 401k for the last 3-4 years. It's not ideal, but I'm not rejoining the rat race.

"Change for change’s sake doesn’t always turn out well."

@a3 100% agree. Tell Cigna that. How about they fix what they have before messing everything up constantly just for the sake of looking like they innovate? Everyone quickly learns the mantra, "The C in Cigna is for change" and it's bs because it's rarely well-planned and implemented smoothly. We just have to stumble through with the janky policies and tech they slap together each year.

@b5 same! My job is also affecting my health. I’m the sole provider. Need to pay some things off. I’m so exhausted.

I think the most important part of that is that op is (and was) unhappy. That's what I'm reading into it anyway, since you said "might improve. Instead, they got worse."

If you're unhappy, you need to work to make yourself happy. That could be from within, or that could be by finding another job.

I know that's over simplifying things. And I know not everyone has options. And it sure doesn't feel like we have much power to improve things.

But still, your own happiness is at the heart of it. You only get so much time on Earth, and time you spend unhappy here is not time you can get back.

I’m staying and riding it out another two years max. This job is affecting my health and I don’t want to die at my desk. But I need the two years for debt payoff
