Got laid off last year and have been searching for months. Finally landed an offer but the commute is rough. About 75 minutes each way with traffic. I used to work from home for nearly six years before all this, so the thought of doing that drive three days a week is making me feel sick. After eight months of looking, I'm scared to say no even though I'm not desperate financially. Anyone been in this spot?

Yeah that happened to me. Restructured a number of years ago, then rehired after a few months, but at a job with a good 70 minute commute. I took the Cisco 401k and rolled it into their 401k, then once I hit the age of 55; retired and life is good. You can leave your current employer, for any reason, and start drawing from your for 401k plan, at that current employer, without the extra 10% early penalty.
Above plan assumes you were at Cisco a long time, and have a good stash built into your 401k plan, and could live off of of it starting at age 55. Key to Cisco was investing heavy in their BrokerageLink option on the 401k, and doing day trading; at least it was for me.
With planning, anyone can do it to. I had to do that commute for two years, luckily only two years.
Ironically, once I left my employer at 55, a recruiter asked me to go back to Cisco as a red badge. I went on the interview, but after talking with the hiring mangler (that is not a typo), I said no way.
Life is good.
Use the commute time to learn. So much info out there. Understand macro economics, learn a language. Then plot your next move. Ironically easier to attract prospective employers when you're already employed.
Take the offer. It's a tough world out there. 75 min one way with traffic is not so bad, you can always negotiate hybrid options.
If not, then still take it. Can't live off the air.
You are desperate asking the clowns on this board.
You sound like a gen Z whiner. Buckle up buttercup..... commute a little or eat spam for dinner, the choice is yours.
Toughen up and take it. Do the job, have a job, and then down the track find something more suitable. It isn't a hard choice.
I spent decades sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic for an hour each way. It's tough! Some days after a hectic day at the office, I felt too tired to sit in traffic & dreaded it, but suffered through it anyway. Now that I've worked from home for 7 years, there's no way I could go back to commuting again. I think you gotta go w/ your gut on this one. Is the job worth the twice daily agony?
Maybe you could rent a room from someone a few days a week to save on ⛽️, stress & long commute.
Just a thought.
