Are you expected to work the two weeks notice or not? I start a new job in a week, but I don't want to not give notice if I can avoid it. Not that I'd want to return to Staples, but you never know what might happen, so I'd like not to burn any bridges if possible.

Depending on your relationship with your mgr. if he/she/they/it/dog/cat was miserable towards you, take the opportunity to F them. If not, be kind and give whatever you feel is appropriate

Corporate America views you as a number. I was laid off at 8 AM with my access removed by lunchtime. After decades of hard work. They don’t know you jack sh-t and you don’t owe them jack sh-t either. If you can get the two weeks do it get paid for doing nothing.
If you quit and don’t give notice, your manager can have HR flag you as “DNR” Do Not Rehire
I was a 20+ year employee and I was given 8 hours to clean out my desk, my computer and the only nice thing was the fake words out of there mouths. My motto is that it’s better to F them before they F you! Unless you enjoy being F’d.
Current policy is to let direct reports finish out their term, so long as they're in good standing and aren't leaving for a competitor.
If leaving for a competitor, you can expect your access to be revoked within the hour lol
@OP 2 weeks notice is a very outdated process. Do they give people two weeks notice when they proceed with layoffs every other month? It’s not needed
2 weeks is customary but honestly not really required. Just explain you had a better opportunity come up and that you can only give a week. Congratulations on getting out!
