Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

The layoffs have unleashed total chaos

Nothing gets done. Priorities change by the day. Projects launch and die overnight. Key people vanish without warning. Managers are overwhelmed. I've completely checked out. No more goal-oriented work, just treading water. And I'm pretty sure most people are doing the same.

@gg I understand how AI should be used, but I don't think those who are gung ho about it seem to care enough to think it through. Internet and cell phones may dominate our lives, but are our lives better because of them than they were for people without them? Schools are banning both because, for the first time in recent history, the newer generation is lagging their parents generation despite having the intelligence. The question is a deeper one, not about conveniences. AI has its place, and it is an excellent tool, but throwing AI at everything is a like how it was when people discovered internet po-n.

@ky right, because there is never fraud or corruption in those free hand out programs... read the news and learn. The last thing you want is for the government to be the main source of income for working age people. Look what happened after covid was over and people stayed on the handouts. Why go work 40 hours a week when the government will give yo 32 for free?

Your value in the job market is based on your skills. If the best job you can find is minimum wage than improve your skills. When you go buy a car do you buy just anything or do you pick the one that is the best value for the price? The same thing apples in the job market only now you are the used car you are selling...

@d8 AI is in the early stages of being adopted. Like anything else it will take people time to learn how to use it. Compare it to the Internet or cell phones which are 2 technologies that dominate our lives today. Both were novelties when they came out and have evolved into something most people can't do without. The improvements in AI are still happening at an exponential rate and the release cycles between new models is getting shorter. You can act like it will fail but it is just you being in denial. Learn how to use it, even if you are older, or prepare to get left behind.

It could be argued that everything since August/September 2025 layoffs has been chaos. I was part of this March RIF, and for last 6 months groups just tossed things in the air for AI, 100 projects, no progress, all mess. Re-orgs with no plans. It will only get worse. Anyone who gave feedback and didn't say yes to everything got canned this round.

This is good and quick evidence for AI failing humanity. Use of AI by schools/kids will show negative effects much later.

I just use all this new Codex stuff and getting as much experience as possible, which I suspect will be quite useful on my resume

If you are out the door tomorrow regardless of performance what would you do? People are looking for exit options while doing bare minimum. People are smart they have seen high performers been thrown out - so why bother - best to spend energy in right direction - that means what benefits you not the company.
