Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Ticketing Dispatch System Coming Soon

Verizon is currently conducting time and motion studies:

  1. The Core Concept
A "Time and Motion" study is a method used to determine the "standard time" it should take to complete a specific task.

Time Study: Measuring how long a technician takes to complete an install or repair (e.g., "30 minutes for a router setup").

Motion Study: Analyzing the steps or movements involved to find the most efficient way to do the work with the least amount of wasted effort.

  1. Modern Application: Verizon Connect
In 2026, Verizon doesn't just use stopwatches; they use AI-driven software. Their "Time and Motion" data is captured through:

GPS & Telematics: Tracking "dwell time" (how long a van is parked at a customer’s house) to see if the work matches the scheduled duration.

Planned vs. Actual (PVA) Reporting: Comparing how long a job should have taken versus how long it actually took.

Breadcrumb Trails: Seeing the physical route and movements of a technician to eliminate "dead miles" or inefficient routing.

  1. Why Verizon Uses It
Verizon uses this data for three main reasons:

Labor Standards: Setting realistic quotas for technicians so they aren't overworked, but also aren't idle.

Customer ETAs: Providing you with a "the tech will be there between 1:00 and 3:00" window based on real-time data of how long previous jobs are taking that day.

Cost Reduction: Identifying where time is being wasted—such as a technician having to return to the warehouse because they didn't have a specific part (a "motion" error).

  1. Technician Perspective
If you are a Verizon employee, "Time and Motion" is often the metric used to evaluate your productivity. It measures your "wrench time" (actual work) versus your travel time and breaks. High-performing techs are those whose "actual" times consistently align with the "standard" times determined by these studies.

@ef Exactly. Meanwhile they dispatch 3 different technicians to the same site, on the same day, to the same bay, same shelf to wire 3 different 100gig circuits.

How is this efficient dispatching? Let's focus where we are broken, instead of always assuming techs are the problem.

I cant wait to become more efficient for the 2 jobs I have per day. THE 2 JOBS I HAVE TO FIND MYSELF.

Efficiency talk, constant brow beating about metrics....it's all to distract from the fact that a large portion of this company has no real work.

Smoke and mirrors.

Keep forcing your ridiculous reports and metrics down our throats. You cry wolf. Soon no one will care about meeting a number.. Most of us already don't.

Rome is burning. Play your fiddle.

@e1 imagine if your position was changed to a union job overnight. You come to work the next day and your boss says "sign this to join the union or you don't have a job". That's exactly how it happened for MCI techs. (in some states).

Don't be so small minded. Not every Union position is some lazy a$$ Fios tech out on disability every other 6 months.

Management isn't much better. They have zero interest in how the business is running. Only concern is their scorecard and next bonus.

@ab that is an OUTSTANDING use of a tech (or any union member, really)
It's too bad it would rile up the SPCA.

@a3 mgmt employees no need to be tracked. They do not hide behind a union. If they do not perform their duties as requested, they are gone...period....

@OP Been going on for years in NJ. They also hired PI’s to videotape your whole day on the sneak. Only stopped when they videotaped Vz’s labor head honcho’s son. Let’s just say, he wasn’t happy.

@a9 Typical management, set a union tech on fire so you can put the fire out and be the hero.

This was provided by VZB management. Notice how an ETMS outage ticket is weighted as less important than a stupid RMOD. Sure we put our customers FIRST!!

Verizon has been using this telematics data for ages. We've had tech's written up for completing equipment retrieve dispatches when their vehicles never moved. Pretty common actually because we call the customer and see that they moved 7 years ago. What's the point in driving somewhere when you know there is no equipment. However they also want all dispatches to be Completed out. It's a catch 22.

Sad part is, they invest in these research studies to make Technicians more efficient, but we only get 2 jobs per day. We have the bandwidth, but no one is selling anything. Go get us some work instead of focusing on making us more efficient... New VP, new shiny Nickle. When their new project fails, not to worry.... reorg.

We need a system to track Level 5 and above time. Track all those company vehicles that never visit work sites or go to the office three days a week. Track their company badge swipes, Track their keyboard time, Track their meeting time. You will find all kinds of interesting trends. I would place good money on the fact that you would be hard pressed to find a 40 Hours worked week for most managers. Track their phone and Slack availability. Track their response time to email and Slack messages, Track their following up on issues, Track how often they just forward emails rather than follow up themselves. This is what really needs fixed!

So the costly analytics program is suppose to save the company money by reporting inaccurate information?
