Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

I think there is another purge coming.

Just learned managers must have 15-18 direct reports, directors 7-9.

There are many managers with only 5-10, directors, 3-5.

I think we will see consolidation.

@1hn What is the intent of monthly 1:1 - coddling?. I personally don't find any value in my own 1:1. - check a box babysitting adults

  • If your team members have metrics to meet monthly - frankly they should be tracking that themselves. Send them a monthly summary and be done with it. If they dispute it then you can chat.
  • Each team member should be keeping track of their own status - if they have an issue or problem, they need to request a 1:1 - that would make sense. Otherwise do your work
  • If you don't know the production status of each of your team members- you are not doing your job. God knows this place has a boatload of reports that can tell you anything.
  • Does anyone have any time to hear how unhappy someone is - do they care how unhappy YOU are. Is there anything you can do. No -
  • They need to take out the question on the survey "do you have a voice in changes made etc." No you don't so stop asking and then leave me alone about developing an action plan to address it - I can't

@jp Some director roles don’t have direct reports and are considered individual contributors. So thus rule won’t apply to them. But I have a hard time believing these new numbers are true. Managers with just 7 or 8 direct reports can’t even have 1on 1 with direct reports on a regular basis so I can’t image this is gonna happen without pushback. Elevance loves their toxic people leaders so I just think this is fodder to drive clicks on this site.

@jp I wondered that as well.

Some directors are without managers reporting to them, would the direct report requirements be different than 7-9?

@dd This! The Directors I worked with for instance in Commecial were pretty worthless. They either made their living kissing up to VPs and preaching the gospel of culture or were too in the weeds to effectively lead their teams. Those that were good were either promoted pretty quick or eventually bailed. Sorry to hear about the latest layoffs!

@cf agree with you about the worth of the director role - take all the credit for the wins and place all the blame on the managers when they know the goal is totally ridiculous could easily do without them along with all the Business Change Managers and especially the Director role there -

@ck elevance has many areas with managers having 5-7 direct reports. But this new rule applies everywhere.

@cf most managers in the area I work have anywhere from 20-30 direct reports. All area are different. Can you be more specific where this “purge” might happen?

@OP 15-18 direct reports is frankly standard - when I started here 15 yrs ago I had 40 direct reports - if there is a director with under 7 they need to go - largely micromanagers anyway -most bring nothing to the table but azz kissing the VP - that is a role that has become more worthless over time.
