Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Losing people to retirement

For decades people and culture has been the strength of AT&T. I was 33
when I started at T 14 years ago. Probably the longest employment I have. The folks who were in their 40s and 50s when I started are now retiring. I lost many people already to age and RTO and supposed this trend continues. Barring some directors, my team largely is full of college kids and TDPs. At this point, I feel like I am that soon to be 50 year old in an environment which is more toxic than my predecessors started. The circle of life continues and I now contemplating to start fresh elsewhere.

Yes. People work, then get old and retire. It happens everywhere.

@a6 wow so rude/mean… be careful karma is a b…. you may have some older people in your life who you love and they’re still working and need their jobs. Point is: don’t be so hard on people just because they’re older than you.

Didn’t he pretty much say he wanted older workers gone in just those words?

@a9 I go out of my way to make it the worst experience for everyone possible.

Stop caring, do the minimum, work on your self improvement, beef up the skills for the next job, or side hustle and move on. It’s what I had to do to stay sane. It’s harder than it sounds when all I want to do is crush it, but there just isn’t any reward for that. Be market based, 8 and skate, nobody cares, collect a check and go home.

In 2024 I was working 10-12 hours a day and many 1st quarter Saturdays, never took a sick day in 29 yrs, and was just trying to keep up. I was rewarded with a 2% raise (I'm just below the middle of my salary band).
In response the injustice, I went into RIP mode, retired in place.
Now I do as little as possible, take long walks during the day and omit any stress.
Now, I'm hoping to be rewarded with a layoff which, for me would be great, 6 months of severance salary and unemployment. If the layoff doesn't happen, I'll continue on, many friends in the office and it's only 10 min from the house.
I've made the job easy, stopped all projects, steer every question to the boss to give him something to do. While it's against my DNA to do the retire in place, it's been a blessing of stress relief and understanding of why folks do this at the end of their careers.

“I mentor them in culture by practicing culture. The same ideals my predecessors taught me.”
This is why in person collaboration is so critical.

@a9 I mentor them in culture by practicing culture. The same ideals my predecessors taught me. These are simple ones. Be nice, Be kind and don't be an a-s when someone asks for help. As simple as that. These things go a long way.

Be happy, find it elsewhere. "Let it go" as Elsa once sang.

Dawg, leave as fast as you can. RTO will only make the joint a more miserable place. Imagine 3 hour roundtrip commutes. No space of your own at the office. Seeing all sorts of people everyday, everytime. Ugh.

Dawg...

The college kids are the worse. There's one who walks around my building. Usually wearing some type of anime shirt. If you say hi, he just grunts at you. Seriously if this is our next generation, then no wonder were getting H1B's. Its not funny, but it is funny at the same time.
