Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

Discover Leadership told us a merger with C1 was good

I departed Discover in Jan 2025. Discover offered a over arching payout for those who wish to Opt-In and depart. I took it since I had reviewed this C1 on this site and was not impressed. I run into a few people who still work for Discover/C1 and the limited info they have told me is not good. Discover was an awesome ethical company or at least the division I was in was. They people worked hard, cared about doing the right thing and were always willing to help they coworkers succeed. After the announcement of the Discover/C1 merger I even mentioned to a few others at work that we can not believe what Discover Leadership says. Often after a merger those leaders take the Parachute Package (millions) and depart. So why listen to their encouraging words about the merger. Makes me sad to read the new posts on this site related to C1 and how they are destroying any reminisce of Discover.

Ive heard Discover is 10 years behind tech wise and the associates have inflated titles. Redundant roles will get laid off.

@mr you are telling the absolute truth. C1 is a PIP factory. Every 6 months calibrations swallow really good employees.

Original DFS here. I can tell you that what was once a fun job has turned into a soul su-king job. The entire attitude of people has changed since the take over. I am older so I suspect that will get rid of me at some point in the future so they can replace me with multiple employees.

@20g roles that are involved in managing technologies that are duplicated are targeted.

Like ocp teams, cicd, aws core, os and image building.

All these teams are managing technologies where alternatives exist

Any idea what job roles will be impacted in the May 2026 layoffs? I’m remote but my location is listed under HQ ILLINOIS

The OP’s story is off. No one has had chance for voluntary package. I invite them to provide details to prove me wrong.

Original poster made a very good decision. If Capital One is your only option, take it for as long as you can stay, but if you have other opportunities, I would definitely consider those first. Having a job is a good thing, even if it only lasts a couple of performance management cycles. I would NOT pick up and move to a new city for a Capital One job. Treat that job as a 6 month gig that may give you an option for another 6 months and so on. Save as much as you can.
