Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Part of previous RIF, never returned laptop, still got severance

Random post, but to anyone wondering/concerned if you don't return your laptop in time or are like me and forgot (for good reason and not on purpose, long story and health issues), I still got my severance pay (shrug emoji). Just realized I still had it and thought I'd share

@ak Chances are that most returned laptops are old and would be scrapped, meaning it costs O money. so if you keep it you are doing them a favor.

Mine was almost 6 years old. I doubt it has any resale value, but I did get the kit and sent it back along with my badge and the useless AMEX card.

@ab put a new ssd drive into it and load up whatever you want. At some point in the future if they come looking for the laptop put the old drive in it and ship it back. I had this happen at another tech company. I am still waiting for the return kit to be mailed but that was 5 years ago so I am not expecting it. Laptop still runs great. I installed Ubuntu Linux and use it all the time. I still have their ssd just in case.

The cost of the laptops is really incidental to them but if they ask for it give it back. I am sure they would want a few grand for it.

If you kept the work laptop, make sure to wipe it and reinstall Windows or whatever OS you want....just make sure that everything pertaining to the job is deleted from it...

They don't pay attention - about 15 years ago I left Oracle for another job before coming back, and I sent in an old clunker instead of my work laptop and no one said a thing. 'Your company-issued Dell is now a Lenovo? Whatever...'

Before they closed our office, the old laptops sat in a storage room and weren't sent to Redwood Shores - eventually they went to local e-waste. Each one had a sticky note with the person's name and they were like headstones of people who quit or got RIF'd.

in last RIF, friend told me he can not login to laptop after he signed the severance via a link. Als an employee you can not use usb key to copy personal files out anymore. scp still work!

My severance hit my bank account about three days before the laptop return kit arrived in the mail. I didn't want to give them any excuse to come after me so I sent it back.
