Does anyone know if your current manager will be notified if you apply to an internal position or if that only happens if you make it to the final round?

I had a recruiter screening interview two weeks ago and was told by the recruiter that they have changes things up and will reach out to the current manager for a reference.
Potential hiring manager called my existing manager prior to initial screening interview. Without consent or forewarning .
So, it was a bit awkward. First, existing manager was decent and I would have gladly given a heads up before things started to get serious.
Way to early in the process for this biotch to put me on the spot.
So: anything can and will happen if interviewing internally.
They won't know if it's a different org. They'll only know if you get an offer.
Same LOB, managers talk to each other daily so your Manager will know rightaway.
Different LOB- your manager may not get notified
