P4 to another P5 position if IM

Hello my WF friends — I’m hoping to get some insight from hiring managers or recruiters on here. This may benefit others as well.

After many years of solid meets/exceeds performance, I ended up with an IM rating this past cycle. TLDR: my manager and I didn’t really click.

I’ve found a couple of positions in other areas that would actually be a promotion for me. I also have a positive history with one of the hiring managers, as she’s a former manager of mine.

My question is: would WF policy even allow me to be promoted into another role while in the IM “penalty box”? I don’t believe I’m on a formal PIP, so I don’t think I’m required to disclose last year’s IM when applying.

That said, I assume my IM rating would come up during the interview process. If so, I’m guessing the hiring manager would need to make a strong case to move forward with me, given that context.

Anyway, I’d appreciate any thoughts or experiences on this.

Managers are no longer required to do PIPs. 20% below meets two cycles and terminated. Go with the manager who knows your work and move while you can. If you get below meets at mid, term will likely happen after. Senior leadership guidance is performance terminations will occur regularlyafter every review cycle Feb/March and August/September.

After my IM I applied for every job I was a fit for. For 7 months I always had 5 applications going. I didn’t get one single callback or interview. I have a friend in HR that told me my IM prevented my application from moving forward because most jobs get multiple candidates who don’t have IM on their most recent reviews.

You will never know because no one will tell you that is the reason you are not selected. Trust me you will never know and not be able to move despite past performance and you know the hiring mgr. All decisions go up the chain.

Hiring managers and recruiters can see your last rating and all the jobs you've posted for.

Not all IMs are being managed out. Its forced stack ranking. In most cases, the chairs rotate. It depends on your group and LOB but in almost all cases from talking to peers in various groups its just musical chairs.

I would be proactive if it comes up. Let AI give you the right spin for the circumstances. If you can move out, go for it. Let your manager figure out another way to make the stack ranking numbers work out.

Exceeds -> Meets -> IM means your being 'managed out' without severance.

@a2

Why not just retire at this point?
Especially if they just gave you an IM...it means they've already got you on a list to go anyway.
You're in your 60s.
Everyone's situation is different, sure, but come on...when is enough working enough?

4 decades in the rat race should be sufficient.
Enjoy what time you have left, and give yourself the GIFT of FREE TIME to yourself!

The IM will come up. Hiring managers can now request and receive perf ratings. Nothing will systemically prevent you from applying or being selected by recruiter for screening though

If you have a connection with a prior manager that is probably your best bet.

Otherwise you should be prepared with why you fell short in that ratings cycle, and it should focus on you and show self awareness and learning. If you give even a whiff of “my manager and I didn’t click”, that will be the end of your candidacy.
