Thread regarding Open Text Corp. layoffs

I'll be honest

I wish I’d been laid off. Not because I’d enjoy being unemployed, but because this whole thing has me so mentally drained that I don’t know how I’m going to handle more rounds, and we all know there will be more. At this point, it almost feels like getting it over with would be the better option.

I've been through this before with a company that was melting down and behind the times; Lucent. Here's the deal- if you don't have much savings or tenure, it's in your interest to find a new gig ASAP. Your chances are better making at least a lateral move when you are still employed. If you're like me, been there done that, have savings, am old, and have tenure (they bridged my time from my old company), then it's in your interest to let it happen and get a package. If you are old, and don't have a cushion for a 6 month search- run. I took the package at Lucent. It tool me 6 months to find a gig at half the pay. It took another 3 years, at least, to get yet another job and approach where I was.

My girlfriend was let go where she worked. She's 58. She wants 85-100k, 1/2 remote, moving expense, yada yada yada. She's gotten a few interviews, but they don't go where she wants to go. It's a mess. Sure she has experience. You aren't top-o-the-game at that age and you are competing with go-getters 10-15 years younger. I know a guy that got let go at that age. He suffered for months, finally getting a gig at an apple store. It was a step down, but he worked his way back up from there.

My two cents. If you cannot afford 6 months to find a lesser paying gig, start looking today. Make something happen for you rather than letting it happen to you.

My team lost a lot of folks this time last year, and it took most of them six months to a year to land a new one-- typically for less pay. Seems like the best time to look for a new job is when you don't need it.

@q1 OVERPAYING for MF was the problem. Their legacy customer base and outdated tech stack still had marginal value, if acquired at a reasonable price.

MicroFocus was the straw that broke the camel’s back. We are in the desert starving and dying.

On the positive side, OpenText management is getting a lot of layoff experience. Maybe some employers looking to cut headcount will hire these managers given all their experience.

It’s like a boat, the best days are when you buy it and sell it. We are a sinking boat so the sale is even more satisfying.
