Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Why are performance reviews here such a joke?

I was just thinking about this, the feedback I got for the last review was so vague it's meaningless. What's the point of it? I know I'm not the only one with this issue.

@ps maybe you haven't been at Nike long enough. Before if you got an exceeds you got a bonus multiplier and top level raise.....so it was very worth working hard to get the exceeds...until DEI determined can't build equity unless we give low performers raises over the people getting exceeds.

@p5

Can we seriously shut the f up about DEI?

It’s so tired and un-nuanced. It isn’t just about DEI. Performance reviews are a joke and have been a joke long before “DEI” was a term.

Stop the bad faith political jostling, plz

Nike separated performance review from compensation in the name of DEI. Now the performance review is worthless..it means nothing to anybody...ask your manager what working for a highly successful gets you.

Because the ratings go into the system months before you submit your year end self review. It’s a sham.

@e0

I got "Highly Successful" four years in a row and then got laid off for my efforts. My time at Nike was such a joke.

I only pop in here once and awhile to watch the place burn down.

My manager and I talked nearly every day and sat just a few desks apart. Reviews consisted of me gathering a few things, checking boxes, changing the date from last year and sending it to her. She often added things I had forgotten.

If your manager needs a CFE to know what you are doing then it’s already too late…. That course correction should be happening constantly.

Funny that all of that all the posts about Resilience and JM were deleted. Let him be exposed already! Those posts shed light on the corrupt work environment and his lack of morals and integrity. His sole job is to protect our company and the truth should be exposed and people should know the truth.

@OP they're a joke because if they were for real most of you dummies would be on PIPs.

4/5 rating here two years in a row, want to know what that got me? Minimal raise and no promotion.

Reviews aren't intended to be a useful exercise for the majority of employees. They are just a tool for managers to leverage for whatever percentage of employees need to be put on a PIP and managed out. For the rest of the employees (majority) it's just management theater to project the illusion that your performance matters more than the personal relationship you do or don't have with the VP class.

From reorgs shifting teams around and breaking up established relationships, to the fact that managers are disincentivized to getting the reports promoted because they they lose a high performer and have to find a replacement, it's easy to see why this doesn't happen as often as it should.

It's also easy to fall into the rose tinted glasses trap when Nike was expanding rapidly, there were lots of new high level roles popping up all the time. Now it's more cut throat and your manager is likely competing with you for that same promotion role.

It’s just another way that managers can check a box claiming that they support your growth and development OR it’s a means to get you towards an action plan and get rid of you! Biggest waste of time and energy.

Back in the day they truly were used to help develop people. To build bench strength because managers actually cared about their direct reports. Those days are gone.
