I feel little awkward

The atmosphere at Oracle right now is honestly exhausting. It feels like everyone’s on edge all the time—you can’t even go grab coffee or step into the bathroom without overhearing someone talking about layoffs. It’s nonstop.

I kind of regret bringing it up to my manager. I thought I’d get some clarity, but it was just the usual vague “our org might be impacted” answer. Now I’m overthinking it, like did I just make myself look anxious or put a target on my back? I hate that I even opened that door.

And honestly, we’ve all seen how this goes. They’ll use this as a reason to freeze raises, skip promos, no stock refreshes, and then expect the same people to pick up all the extra work afterward. It’s hard not to feel cynical about it at this point.

Even if I make it through, I don’t know how much longer I want to stay. I’ve been a top performer for six years and it’s been… fine, I guess? But not in a way that makes me feel secure or valued. And now with all this going on, it just makes everything feel kind of pointless.

Also, the whole AI push here feels so surface-level. I’ve been working on my own stuff outside of work, so I’m actually interested in it, but internally it just feels like teams are scrambling to throw together basic agents so they can say they’re “doing AI.” We don’t even have the data to do anything meaningful. It’s frustrating to watch.

Your lockout happens after your manager inputs your contact information following the 1:1 call. If you're on good terms with your manager, they will delay that entry to give you time to send farewell messages and tie up lose ends. Mine refused to read "the script" and gave me 2 hours of time before submitting my information for lockout.

@OP Not awkward at all...I was there and a top performer for 12 years and I got blindsided as party of BS "RIF" in October...it was a two-minute phone conversation that was cold, impersonal, and frankly unprofessional. Less than five minutes after the call I was locked out of my computer. No opportunity to even say goodbye to my team and colleagues. I've seen the sheer volume increase year over year, quarter after quarter, the penny-pinching is insane. Greedy mo--ns at the top who don't even know what they are doing. No raises, no appreciation. GET OUT BEFORE THEY PUSH YOU OUT

This feels exactly right. The people pounding their fist on the table saying, "you all need to be using AI" flatly do not understand what they're even talking about. And they're giving us second-rate tools, on top. Claude code beats the s**t out of codex, but unsurprisingly, given Oracle's financial interests, guess what we've got?

@OP You sound like a conscientious employee and if you get laid off, you'll do just fine. You'll collect ~3 months of severance, plus you'll be eligible for unemployment. That should cover you for 6 months. And good employees like yourself are in demand in the workforce, it'll take some time, but you will land on your feet - making more money than Oracle was paying you. Chin up friend.

@a5, Look, the solution is simple: start preparing your exit now, even if you survive this round. Nothing is going to work out here long-term because Oracle isn't a data company anymore... it’s just a pure infrastructure play, and we’re already lagging way behind in the AI space. The longer you stay, the more you lose.

I’m seeing all these orgs forcing 'AI learning' and random hackathons just so leadership can check a box. Management is just desperate to show 'AI initiatives' to their own bosses, slapping buzzwords like AI and ML on every project without even understanding the underlying tech or if it’s even a fit. There’s almost zero technical expertise left at that level, and the seniors who actually know what they’re doing just stay silent because their contributions aren't even valued anymore.

It’s honestly painful to watch people just copy pasting from tools like Cline or Oracle Code Assist straight into VS Code without understanding the flow. Everything is becoming a total mumble jumble. They’re basically trashing years of solid architecture with mindless copy-pasting instead of actually understanding why those design choices were made in the first place. The underlying codebase is becoming pure chaos, and we're ki-ling years of grown architecture for the sake of a few buzzwords.

OP, welcome to the real world. Nothing is guaranteed The world is changing rapidly and old norms and values no longer seem to matter. Control what you have control over and prepare for the worst. If something better happens great but if it doesn't you are still prepared. If you make it through this round be glad and prepare for the next round it will happen.

Take a deep breath and think this through. Worst case people are talking about a 20% layoff. This means when it is over 8 out of 10 people will still have their jobs. If you have been a consistent high performer you are probably fine. Plan for the next round.
