Remote Worker Privilege Abuse

To all you hard working employees,

I have first hand information of a remote CMSA willfully abuser their remote work privileges. This person violates HIPPA on a regular basis, takes well over hour breaks everyday on a every other week basis. I have had their laptop on my lap and seeing member names, being present during meetings, and all the while this employee is driving or at a friend’s house or doing god knows what else. It’s abuse of privileges and that’s obvious. This person manipulates their manager to stay in good graces but in reality if this company laid off anyone, this person in question should be the first to go. So this may sound vindictive but who do I whistleblow to?? Because none of you can justify this kind of behavior.

We had a nurse working in UR department, she would routinely go to grocery store or run errands during workday. Another nurse was a stay home mom drawing a paycheck, she would drive her kids to school, go for coffee with other Moms and was the best homeroom mom at the school.

@bh apparently you guys don’t read the annual ethics training details. It’s everyone’s responsibility

@126 Ethics and privacy is controlled by HR and senior leadership. Most of them work from home. Any issues reported about remote work will just be squashed by HR.

This is not social media. There is a documented process to report these types of violations and it is referenced in everyone’s yearly Ethics and Privacy training.

@OP I know a few people that fall into this category
My neighbor is one of them. Even brags that he gets paid for 40 hrs but works 2, especially now that he uses AI to do everything for him.

@a6 im a bit puzzled by your story… im assuming both of you work remote?
1) how is their laptop on your lap? Do they drop it off at your house, why they go run errands?
2) are you also driving with them while they are driving?
Again a but puzzled and you may be enabling this persons behavior. Hopefully you dont get in trouble for participating in it.

Unless it's in your stated job responsibility to manage and monitor this co-worker:

MIND
YOUR
OWN
BUSINESS

Someone is in charge of that, and it ain't you.

I would contact HR, even skip level and contact their managers manager or go to the top leader of the segment if you can't get traction. I would refuse to type anything in their computer. I work from home and work my butt off every day. Many times early and late. Not all work at home do this. I do not deal with patient info but I still close my computer and lock it when I leave it. They need to probably go in to work and not allowed those privileges. I never take working from home for granted. If anything I personally and way more productive at home than when I go in but I have a different work ethic than this person. Report it! You could save our member info.

What you describe is frustrating for any co worker. In time most people will encounter this type of co worker at some point. I would be cautious about pursuing it though, especially at Humana as it can & often does get turned around & you end up being the one they start to look at. Speaking from experience as I left Humana after 9 years.

“ I have had their laptop on my lap and seeing member names, being present during meetings, and all the while this employee is driving or at a friend’s house or doing god knows what else” this is a very confusing sentence and it’s not clear what you’re saying here. In my experience not just with Humana, but other work environments, you will always work with a few people like the one you’re describing. That’s just the reality of the human experience. The question you need to focus on is “does this person hurt my ability to perform my job.” And obviously, that is the most important thing you need let dictate your behavior. Assuming you’re not this person’s supervisor, but from what you’re describing here seems to be personal grievances that don’t really affect your day to day. Especially since you’re remote. I’m sure your manager is aware of the issues, I’d give it time and the problem will probably resolve itself.

@OP Well this has been going on for over a year. I did call and the case was reviewed, how thoroughly I’m unsure of. I was given a “key” which was a code about the results of the investigation. I will call again before the end of the week. I’ve typed messages for this person on their laptop while the person is driving. This person is abusing any and all privileges they have.
