They're another completely useless layer of management

I've been in the telecom business for 42 years and I've almost completed 30 as a union member before the merger of GTE and Bell Atlantic. I've never seen such an obtuse riff coming from the bottom up. We've gotten rid of our talent. This isn't Paypal were managers can easily be replaced. Technicians have years of experience that you just can't add water and create a replacement. We're dealing with equipment that is out of production for decades, still consuming enormous amounts of energy. It is the upper management that needs replacement but they've been able to keep their jobs by eliminating ours. Everything started going downhill when Ivan our first CEO left the company and let McAdams purchase 49% of Vodaphone for 130 Billion dollars. I had to double check that amount. We had to sell our data centers and wireless towers to cover the purchase. Ivan was diversifying and McAdams consolidating. Any financial advisor would give the same advise. The days of the $100 cell phone and contract or over, never to return. 100 different nimble companies with little overhead buy wholesale and undercut us.

ADs are basically backup individual contributors for the never ending guilt free vacations, appointments, sick days, and inability for people to problem solve without step by step instructions.

In B2B our AD's have 5+. I think that layer makes sense. Director level, not so much. Zero interaction with front line, really just sitting on calls talking about numbers all day. AD's could definitely report straight to Sr Directors.

Maybe they can go back to the IC track?

You obviously are not in Ops. Most ADs have 35 or more.

My AD is one of them. These recent changes made him very insecure. Started behaving weirdly.

While I do have sympathy but we can’t survive as a company with so many layers.

It's bound to happen. We're definitely top-heavy with all these extra Layers.
