It used to be that if you got hired here, you had a future. Different roles, regular raises, promotions from within. Real job security. Leadership today doesn't seem to care about building a stable workforce. That old model means nothing to them now.

For me, 1990-1999 were my best years at Canon. From my perspective, it was truly a "Canon Family". But from 2000 to 2020, every new year was a little less about family and more about "you now have to do more with less", and Human Resources went from being helpful - to US being the human resource that Canon would use, until they used us up. I check back here every six months or so to see if it's gotten any better. Doesn't look like it.
Next job will be at a smaller company. You know all the players. More transparency and less uncertainty. Just because a company is big doesn't means it's great. Far from it.
leadership is beyond poor. from the manager to the vps... just beyond poor.
at hq you are just a c number thats all ... unless you have a different letter... then the treatment is different you are considered better that the c and are taken care of .
When managers deflect when an upper-manager is literally caught with their pants down, the manager deflects and dismisses it as you are the one that caused the problem that they created. It proves how effed up this company is. Cover managerial incompetence. It's no wonder the company is in a downward spiral like a brown bomber in a toilet 🚽
@OP regretably no company in america thinks that way anymore. We used to have pensions now we have h1-b visas and off-shore call centers to cut our throats. labor in america has been turned to serfdom intentionally and by design. work you tired, pay you nothing, and keep you in debt and in te---r of losing everything for not saying the right thing to your boss. whatever loyalty you will find is in your coworkers, not your boss, because at least as coworkers we all suffer together.
Sad but true.
Unfortunately, that’s how it is everywhere these days.
I started my career at a 3rd generation family owned & operated business. The main reason I stayed there for about a decade, despite dismal pay and no advancement opportunities, was that I was treated with respect and the owners treated you like a member of their own family. One of the VPs (my boss as well) would give me a ride to and from work several times a week because of my circumstances. He drove an hour out of his way because he valued my work ethic and contributions. He would always ask about my personal interests, family, and life issues. It got to a point, however, that I was in my early 30’s, and getting paid a fast-food worker-level salary (I was not working in fast food, haha) despite having an undergraduate degree. That’s when I decided to go back to school for a Masters degree and look for opportunities at a bigger corporation where I could earn a better salary and get some brand recognition on my resume.
At the time I stated with Canon, I knew upfront that it would never be the same as my first job. I think I had reasonable expectations from the start. However, as each year has gone by, things have gotten progressively worse, and even my low bar expectations are not being met. This experience working for a large corporation has been truly shocking, and you can’t fully comprehend it until you witness it firsthand.
My former boss reaches out to me occasionally to see how things are going. I think he wants me to come back. He asks about how much I make, but unfortunately I don’t think he can match what I’m earning now.
So, I guess I’m stuck cashing in a modest paycheck until Sammy-San eliminates my position in favor of his new BFF, Google Gemini.
I’m afraid that I will never find a decent paying job with the culture I experienced at my first employer, SIGH…….
