Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Be careful if located in OBP

I think most floors (business units) have heard whispers about relocating away from downtown Boston as a cost savings measure. One Director on my floor had their employment very swiftly terminated this week as they apparently shared what they knew on a Teams chat (supposedly involved that team going to Lake Mary in 9-12 months). Directors and above are under very strict instructions from senior management to keep plans top secret. If asked directly they are told to deflect and use phrases like “no immediate plans”.

Even talking about this stuff out in the open is now seemingly grounds for termination. Definitely do not put anything on e-mail or Teams. Stay safe out there.

Back office for sure. The tell is if your job suddenly got flipped upside down in the last 90 days. Like a 180 degree turn from what you did last year and goals dominated by AI.

They are trying to get away from people driven workflows dominated by SME's and into process driven workflows that can be replaced virtual employees and lower cost workers.

If you work on a OBP floor that has been renovated then your role is likely safe but if you work on a floor that reminds you of your grandmothers living room then that business unit is under review.

This might be a repeat comment because I don’t see it when I refreshed so forgive me. I find this interesting because they moved some from OBP temporarily to do construction on a few floors and eventually move Everett to OBP. The remaining lease in Everett is up in 2027. Can anyone confirm if that is no longer the plan

People who work in Pittsburgh aren’t safe either. They’re cutting here too.

@OP this place will continue to sc--w people over. Central Ny was closed and all workers forced permanently home along with many other locations and are all now being terminated for being wfh. It’s disgusting. And ops is not using lake mary anymore. Its not considered a growth location and the push is to texas

You only need to be careful if you’re in the back office. Anyone who was in a low cost location area in Boston area (Everett) that got relocated to OBP (expensive real estate) but is in a cost center role, could be in crossfire for getting their role moved to a low cost city like Lake Mary or Pittsburgh. Most of OBP is front office though which isn’t going anywhere generally. Just the fact that OP’s role might get moved to Lake Mary is close to proof that it’s a back office job that we probably don’t want in an expensive market. We don’t have front office/investment staff in Lake Mary.
