Thread regarding IBM layoffs

COBOL modernization no longer requires years of consultant work

AI’s ability to replace work traditionally done by
human consultants threatens parts of IBM’s
business model.
Sounds like it will help accelerate and increase RAs which is right in-line with IBM's business model.

It was always going to be this way, AI or no AI. Let's call it what it always was...automation. The automobile replaces the horse and buggy, the spreadsheet replaced the adding machine, the word processor replaced the typewriter. And let's be honest with ourselves...there's a lot of very readable COBOL that can be easily translated and tested.

Does that mean that one can easily escape DB2, IMS, CICS? Not necessarily. Can the migration be automated? Maybe, and maybe not. There will always be a need for skilled people to figure out this kind of stuff. We call them consultants. And yeah, there's lots of legacy COBOL and Assembler that will need a human tough.

This is just a bunch of hoo-ha.

Anyone that thinks they can fire up this tool and move off a mainframe with it is due to be looking for a new job pretty soon.

@OP correct. Accenture laid off 20,000. IBM has been hacking away at Consulting for a few years and good LLMs will mow them down like a Toro mower. Gerstner shelled out $3,500,000,000 for PwC a long time ago which is 1 of many IBM over pays. IBM Consulting is VERY WEAK compared to other co's.
