Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Laid off after a new manager pushed me out

Had a solid four years going until leadership changed and suddenly I was out. Before tech I was a director at a global company. Now at mid 40s with twenty years experience and an MBA, I can't get anyone to call back. Two months and not even a single interview. I know that doesn't sound long but it stings differently when you've worked this hard your whole life only to be dismissed.

When I was ra I got calls, did the technical interview over the phone, knew
i aced all their technical questions. Sent the thank you email for their time. Followed up after couple of weeks and heard we canceled the position or they hired someone. They just want to say they interviewed a person in an age group to avoid age discrimination.
i was 58 at the time. They want newbies out of school at a much cheaper rate

@bp+1kjmmm8rw you are not so bright, but obviously biased. I do read external and they seem to follow the US news that is biased. Someone outside the house is NOT a better evaluator of what happens in the house.

Plumbing. That's where it's at if you're looking to pivot. You'll always have work, you won't be replaced by AI, and the pay is good to very good. Plus, having worked at the IBM shithole, you'll have an edge.

If you are looking for a job in the US, stop saying you have an MBA.
With the current gov admin all uneducated, all of a sudden it’s all the rage. Corporate America dislikes the educated. You just might stand up for yourself. Down and d-mb is where it’s at, hence the uneducated admin.
Also tech is flailing right now. They don’t know what they are or what they want to be-again-following the admin. Especially IBM. No one better at smoke and mirrors pretend capabilities.

If you think this is not true, read non US news-about the ACTUAL state of affairs in the US.

'I know of others that have also completely pivoted to a new occupation.'

just curious

serious question, have politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers (liaryers), judges (fudges), or 'professors' ever pivoted to a new occupation?

AI isn't a skillset
statistics and mathematics are

Perhaps, and easier said than done, re-invent yourself. Take those hours waiting for calls back and begin diving into a new skillset like AI. Sure its not easy, not for everyone, but if you are looking for an edge, perhaps that might be it. I know of others that have also completely pivoted to a new occupation. I've been where you are, not sure what is the next move, or the right one. Hang in there, just keep working at it.

Sorry to hear. IBM is a bloated company. The ratio of useless people to useful ones (Doing real work) is very high.
The first category (useless people) is less protected.
