Is it against the law to be given your annual review via video to me and I had to sit in the middle of a room with other workers around me who heard the entire thing? I was not given the opportunity for any privacy at all. Everyone heard the entire review. It was embarrassing.

The only embarrassment is you. You should be fired.
Been following this with a chuckle and see one of three scenarios: 1) OP is new, has never had a virtual review before, and the new boss didn’t know the OP’s open-air situation. OP asked something like “should I take this privately?” and was told no, the call “had to be” taken from desk. Unlikely.
2). Same as #1 except Boss DID know OP’s immediate surroundings and assumed they had headphones/bluetooth some form of keeping the call quiet. So “asking for a private room” or if one was needed was deemed by boss as unnecessary but OP mistakenly took that as a command to take the call in the open. Private room wasn’t so much “denied” but more like “dismissed”. Possible.
3). OP has a pretty good sense of humor and just threw a curveball to a community looking for something other than RTO and merit increase fodder. Probable!
Regardless, thanks for the continued reminder that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
@bz Glad your review was positive. Assuming you’re early in your career or new to Truist, you don’t have to request a private room. You just find one. No one would reasonably “make you” sit anywhere. And, if the call truly is remote, there’s no way anyone would know where you’re sitting and who’s around you. You wouldn’t be defying your boss if you just went into a room for the call. Even if your boss did get uppity about it (unlikely) we call that “beg forgiveness, not permission”.
You can get cheap headphones for like $2.
Unlawful? Nope. Inappropriate and Unprofessional? Absolutely.
OP, this one falls squarely on your shoulders—you’re the one who decides where to sit during a virtual review.
Well that didn’t go the way the OP thought.
OP, what did you expect? You didn’t make it private, that is on you not your boss. If that is all you have to complain about then you are doing better than most of us stuck here.
@bz You think you're exempt from the PMV? Hello—One Team.
Goodness, people calm down. The review was positive. I’m not a slacker. And I was denied a private room. I was told I had to stay in the open. I just thought it was wrong of my employer to not allow privacy during a review. Seems unprofessional.
@OP If you're embarrassed by a recap of your work you're the embarrassment. You had no problem underperforming or slacking during 2025.
@a4 You don’t “request” privacy, you create it. You take a call like that in a conference/work/project room or someplace a little more appropriate. I don’t know your job or work environment but surely there is some place else to take a call like that.
No it’s not against the law to accept a scheduled meeting with your boss, take it via video call, and put it on speaker for all the office to hear. But it’s pretty stupid and best and rude at worst.
Are you “the one”? Volume turned up loud, yelling into a mike like a 1930’s radio announcer, eating liver and onions for lunch while watching Gram vids on speaker? Funny that you controlled the time, place, and dissemination of this review and yet your concern is with yourself. Ever think that maybe your boss didn’t want that broadcast (and probably would object if he or she knew? Ever wonder if you’re annoying the heck out of your office mates? “Against the law”? No, but welcome to the “I’m the reason people don’t want to be in the office” club.
Maybe. It was over a month ago and it was a positive review, But it still bugs me because I feel it should have been private. Aren’t they supposed to be private? I didn’t feel comfortable having everyone hear. And I didn’t say everything I wanted to because I knew everyone was listening.
@OP order headphones maybe?
Was not given any other choice. I requested privacy.
So you're telling me...you accepted the meeting invite, and still logged in from the center of the room. As if you could not have gone to a focus room. As if you couldn't say hey manager, I'm not in a secure location right now, can this wait? Now everybody knows you only got a 3 dollar bonus, and you're embarrassed. Man...just take your 3 dollars and go.
Just another reason to leave as quickly as you can.
