Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Fidelity Politics

I’ve been here since the start of covid in the Spring of 2020. It feels to me like there are a lot of politics with this company. How do I get ahead if my manager is mediocre and doesn’t like me? What can I do? It’s even more difficult because I cant show how hard I work in person because the offices are always so empty.

Your manger is mediocre and doesn't like you? Sounds exactly like my manger. This company has good benefits and ok pay/stability, important in this market, but these low iq middle managers can suck a lot out of people. I've learned just to collect the paycheck and channel excellence into my side gigs.

Unfortunately it's not at all about how hard you work or your work results but how well you play the game. Be active in special interest and affinity groups, keep unpopular opinions to yourself and above all spend valuable work time blowing smoke up the backside of your management.

Even if your manager likes you if they themselves are not in the in group in their reporting line then you are screwed when it comes time for promotion consideration, shares and other goodies. This is true in all companies but it's especially prevalent at Fidelity. Some business lines are much, much worse than others with the politicking.
