Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Would you leave Ford today for less pay?

I have a job offer with job security, more time off, is fully remote but it pays 20-30k less than I make now. Within 3-4 years I’ll be making again what I do now. With how ford is treating everyone and with the promises of “more change” coming next year…would you take the offer, or ride out the storm?

I tend to think a more appropriate question would be "Would you stay at Ford for less pay......?"

With the current direction the company is taking going to EV and such I'm guessing this decision is going to be what most may someday face....

I left Ford was able to find a job in Aerospace and make $15k more a year than I did at the oval. Ford has lost its focus and priorities. bf AND jf are not visionaries or leaders.
JF for a leader you have to be liked by your followers in your case you are hated and a Liar. Free Press continues to give you a pass. Too many NA employees then you open your big mouth about 9k hiring of salaried employees in Mexico. Plain LIAR.

How does it pay 20 to 40 less? Is is 20K pay cut plus a potential loss of 20K bonus?

In 3-4 years you'll make the same? Is a 5k raise year a realistic expectation?

Absolutely not! I was lucky enough to be SIRP’d in August and got a 20% boost in pay and a 50% increase in bonus at another OEM. Budgets are set for next year so you’ve got a 3-4 month window before the sh-t hits the fan. Either get out now or you’ll be begging for a job forthe next two years or working at Uber or Starbucks!
I really think we’re in for a tough 2023-24 until the next president is elected andand starts reversing some of these radical left policies.
I can’t believe how incredibly toxic Ford is. Just started watching the Recruit on Nextflix and I was like OMG! that was every day working at Ford! Life is much-much better on the outside!

That is really dependent on what you need. I think enjoying what you do and the environment is incredibly important. You mentioned money and remote work as a factors. I also value benefits, 401k matching, development, time off, etc. if all things were equal and the difference is money and remote work, I might take 10k less to work anywhere but certainly not 30k.

It depends your skill set. Engineers and IT can find employment without a big cut. However, if your Ford job is administrative or operational, you might have a tougher time finding a high paying job. If your job title includes the words 'analyst' or 'coordinator', you might not have as much value outside of Ford. You also might find that in a tighter job market, an online degree or night school at Baker College doesn't carry the same weight as other educational paths.

In a fantasy scenario, if Ford had to start over and rehire everyone, there are many who would not make it through the interview process due to unrealistic salary demands, insufficient education, or lack of modern skills.

@1plg+1khuvtih- that's a platitude and horrible advice, wanna guess why so many Millenials are saddled with more educational debt than they can pay off using the degree they pursued for happiness instead of pragmatic reasons? Money doesn't automatically follow you on the path of happiness. I'm not advocating that anyone pursue employment that makes them miserable, but rather realise that if there's not a market for "doing what you love" then you'll end up forced into employment that makes you miserable.

@OP. I already applied to jobs that would pay me less than what I make now at Ford. Money is important in life, but it is not all. Already covered that, let's face some truths:

  • There is no job security anymore. Maybe there are degrees, like working on certain fields instead of others, but still no real job security.
  • Time off is good if you have a family that needs you (or you are passionate about a hobby), but not that great if you don't have kids or they already left the "nest". As long as the OT is paid, it makes sense to take the extra work (as long as is not excessive).
  • Your job happiness will be determined by your manager, and in less measure, your team. Since managers and coworkers do move around, a good job today could become a bad job in the future. Maybe staying 3-4 years is not something you'd want to do, so don't bank on it.
  • Remote work is great... for some people, and really bad for others. Which one are you? Would you be able to pickup all the details of your new position by yourself?
  • The best way to ride the storm (and there are multiple storms coming to NA) is to have a large fund for rainy days. If you have saved money, you could wait at Ford, as long as you have a good manager and feel well there. If you don't have money, it is time to move on. You cannot take the risk of losing your job.

I have friends second guessing that they stayed past November 30. The speed in which a company goes out of business is not measurable.

The SULEV30 emission targets for the ice vehicles are an enormous challenge. I don’t think there are enough of the seasoned guys around to make it happen.

On top of that they have gutted the staff in the emission lab to the point of questionable results.

You can fool lots of folks but the truth is in the 10 pager showing green status for R00 and R05 milestones. A tough and intense task at any emission level.

There was a ton of scrambling in Aug before I got canned and I was teaching 3 new engineers the basics. They are probably looking at data as I write this note.

I did one of first PZEV program back in 2006 and had several others since.

My supervisor never asked for an update on where I left off with the training of the new guys. I deleted all files on my computer and sent it back with a note that said good luck.

First off there is no such thing as “job security” (despite whatever spin u were told in the interview) So don’t be gullible into believing that by letting them under pay you now that they will follow thru with the promises that it will be made up to you in a couple years. All companies are there to make profits by any means necessary (whether it’s at your expense or not) Your job is not your family nor your friend. You are nothing more that a random number to achieve that objective.
Have you learned nothing while working at Ford ?
