Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

CAP Plan

I’m going to say what a lot of people are thinking but no one is saying out loud.

Why is “CAP” suddenly being mentioned in almost every group meeting lately?

We’re repeatedly told “it’s not a bad thing,” but historically, CAP has been used as documentation that leads to performance write-ups and eventually layoffs. So let’s be honest—what exactly changed, and why the sudden focus now?

It’s hard not to notice the pattern. The targets keep moving, expectations keep increasing, and the goals feel more and more disconnected from the reality of the actual workload. The people setting these expectations aren’t the ones doing the job every day, under the same pressure, with the same volume, and the same constraints.

At some point, calling it “support” while simultaneously increasing pressure starts to feel less like development and more like positioning.

People deserve honesty, not reassurance that doesn’t align with what they’re experiencing in real time.

So I’ll ask directly:
Is this truly about helping employees improve, or is this the early stage of workforce reduction being framed differently?

Transparency matters. People can handle the truth. What’s hard to handle is feeling managed out while being told everything is fine.

If you’re on cap that means no merit increase, no bonus, and you’re unable to post for another position.

It's all a compliment and overall case to lay you off. It is just to cover the company's butt. It's totally unethical but what else is new.

@QK Not sure there is a RIF on Thursday. Seems like they decided to do Tuesday this week.

@qk Call HR and start a case. I know HR is for the company but at least have it on record.

Went from a top performer for over 12 years to a CAP with no reason cited for performance. I'm 100% sure I'm on the Thursday RIF list. Anyone else?

I have been seeing a lot of talk about “quiet firing” lately, where companies are leaning on performance management instead of layoffs. It can reduce severance costs and avoid some of the optics/legal stuff. Not every case is shady, but in this market the line between performance and cost-cutting can get blurry. Worth paying attention to.

If you're put on a CAP they want you gone. I only know of one person who's ever survived one, but he got laid off eventually.

@gv They are probably looking to place people on CAP purposely to avoid giving them a severance

If I'm not wrong, and I could be, if you are on a CAP and let go because you did not meet the metrics in the time frame they set for you, you are not offered a severance. If you are laid off, you are.

They can keep the money though, apparently, they need it to prop up their failing stock! Lmao

Yeah just like they said getting a 3 is not a bad thing. Putting people on a CAP to manage them out and deny them severance has been a thing for a couple of years. You’re hearing about it more because it works well! Company saves having to pay severance and whatever to what they consider long term, expensive employees that are too loud or ethical to be part of the in crowd. Who cares if you devastate someone, take food out of their kid’s mouths, have them questioning their purpose in love after having devoted so many years of service to a place that would rather gaslight you and toss you on the street than to compensate you appropriately? Feelings are for losers, amirite? Expect more of this, especially since most people don’t have the funds or the wherewithal to sue the company and get back on their feet financially, and especially since everyone thinks it can’t happen to me…until it does.
