Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Asked a question on Exxon’s Layoff page

I posted a question on Exxon’s thread asking for input on their forced ranking that we’re adopting. I think I frightened them all into hiding. 50 some views and crickets but their side has so much more traffic than ours. that’s an indication of the culture Wael has adopted. Command, Control, Destroy, then retire with a golden parachute. I’m feeling closer to peers of other companies than I am to supporting our LT. Fu-k Wael. Fu-k anyone above a JG1.

Just copying my comment from a buried thread into its own thread to draw attention. I think we should all be aware Wael wants Exxon culture. I work with 3 former Exxon people and they all have shockingly similar stories despite working across the US. Dark days are coming.

@r6 US employee, but have almost bled for the company at times. Have seen many friends get the severance. Would be true disappointing if that would not come. Unless I just get to retirement age or close.

In NL the new gov wants to stop severances by 2028. Robin is smart to leave on time, no more golden parachutes.

CVX here (why not get all the IOC’s in one thread?). I was with Shell for ~17 years, jumped to some independents then jumped to Chevron. Been here for 18 more. At first I thought CVX was a “kinder, gentler Shell”, as the culture was more amicable and no one was confrontational or rude (but don’t get me wrong- some of my best friends are Shell alumni). Slowly, the “Chevron Way” (loosely defined cultural norms) have transitioned to Shell Way and I am guessing Exxon Way. We too are going back to ranking, PIP’s, etc., probably for all the same reasons, with management advised by the same consultants. I think there’s a balance to be found somewhere in the middle- not too soft and forgiving of poor performance as Chevron was back in the day, and not so rigid as the model of yearly PIPs to replace layoffs. But we all seem to be careening to the latter. I’m 60 and retiring this year, but I wish the best for all of the younger folks fighting through these times. It’s a great and rewarding industry, just be patient in waiting for the next cultural fad - hopefully it will be valuing the workforce again.

@OP Maybe a little narcissism creeping in. People don't respond to something you write and your response is that you've somehow frightened them? Not that you perhaps just haven't written something very interesting? Or useful?

The world doesn't always revolve on your question. Some may choose to answer but many might just pass it by if it's not relevant to them.

I can tell you that as LM instructions are to track performance this year, and have justification/evidence for forced lower ranking. If you think severance will be offered next time around, think again. I see more layoffs comming but this time masked as "poor performance."

Shell has had forced ranking for YEARS. Are you not familiar with the 9 box?

I already work may of the 9/80 Fridays, or parts of them. When you are on salary, you do what it takes to get the job done.

This is not a Wael thing. For the last 20+ years if Exxon does it, Shell will do it. We are fast followers of Exxon in everything except 9/80
