Thread regarding Pearson PLC layoffs

Manager read layoff statement to me

When people had their "org update" meeting, did anyone else get the "class act" of having their manager read it to them? Probably one of the most childish things I've ever experienced in my life. Lol.

@1gs

It really bummed me out. This person was nice and I always thought we had a good relationship. It's really sad that people are being advised to not treat each other like humans.

A colleague had to lay one of their direct reports off a couple weeks ago. They told me they did not want to read the statement as is and asked if they can say it how they wanted, but they were forced to read it. This person said they read it in a more robotic way as protest to the HR rep who was on the call and forcing them to read it as it was written.

I’ve had to do that a couple times and it was traumatic for me also. Both employees started crying and questioning me. The good news is both employees got new jobs in a better industry with much better pay. Sometimes things really do work out for the best. I sometimes think that I would have been better off being laid off and forced to find a new job with new challenges.

@OP I'm a people manager who had to lay people off a couple years ago. You read what HR gives you like a robot because it wouldn't be fair to start crying yourself and make it about you.

Yes, it was odd. I'm assuming they did it for legal reasons but I wish they just talked to me like a human.

Yep me too. They read out like a bot, not a person. Perhaps because they feel guilty and may face the hate and wrath from the people they are terminating.
