Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Why go above and beyond, or even work hard at this point?

Promotions seem to be archaic at Dell - unless you live in India... - Raises are mostly comical and add maybe $100 to your check lol. Travel is for some weird reason STILL restricted - aka conferences, etc... - the literal constant fear of layoffs 12 months out of the year, then the added stress of RTO micro-management of badge swipes.

I mean, I personally do like my job but at the same time I'm failing to see the point in doing anything more than what is required of me. I could be a hard worker and go "above and beyond" but why? My promotion will never happen, my raise will be a sad 3.7%, which I suppose would cover the tolls and gas I now have to spend to even GO to work...

I used to try to get to the root cause of customer issues so I could create KBs and trainings on how to prevent it from happening again. Got passed over for 2 promotions that went to lesser qualified people. Since then it's been "turn it off and on again" troubleshooting and "see you next week when the problem comes back" and I could not be happier. I still have not been promoted but my raises over the last 3 years have been bigger than any previous year and I am working 1/4 as hard.

my manager does appreciate only few from the team, the selected few are Yes men who will make everything so the manager and vicepresident above him are satisfied.
These actually got recently thank you for going above and beyond.
These 3 will probably get promoted so rest of us will not get even that 3% raise.
And maybe later all except manager and those three špeciál flowers will be laid off

@cb You brought up something that I always thought was fundamentally flawed, not just at Dell but at many large firms.
The rallying cry of Teamwork is constant - we all work toward a common goal. We should help each other.
Yet, raises are pre-budgeted and allocated according to the subjective view of managers. So it would see to me it would be in my best financial interest to sabotage the efforts of others to make myself look better. As some HR consultants like to say - Manage my own brand.

Until this contradictory practice is replaced there will never be equitable raises.

@c6 This is truth. Dell gives around 3-4% average but many get 2% with some getting no raises.

The way Dell structures yearly increases is that they budget for the industry standard; anyone that is promoted that year will get a significant raise at the cost of his own team members, who gets the remaining budget. This is why most get 2% or less. Dell calls it “pay for performance”

If you are sad at 3.7% try 2% which is given out apparently to employees not well liked.

@af BTW inflation in the USA averaged 2.8% last year so a 3% raise is in reality a .2% net raise. If you get a 4% raise when inflation is at 8% (like it was in 2022) you actually took a 4% paycut. You have to go back to 2020 for a 4% raise to actually be a net pay increase.

They get what they pay for. They pay mid salary, they get mid work effort. If they are happy with that then unfortunately there is nothing that you can do apart from work to the level that you believe you are being paid for but to make sure that you hit all required targets so that you don't get pushed onto a PIP

Stop coming on this site every few days posting the same $h*t. Let’s just focus on WFR discussions and rumors.

BTW, 3-4% annual raise has been the norm for many years in the tech industry. So you’re in the middle, not the low end. If you’re complaining about not getting more, ask you’re if you’re truly giving more.

With things as they currently are, being led by who is leading, there is zero point to go above and beyond. It wont get recognized, and you certainly wont get rewarded for it with senior leadership who hates their employees.

Do your minimum for your role and thats all. Your mental health is more important
