Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

Already burnt out at the start of my career

I actually like the work I do, but the conditions are wearing me down fast. We're constantly short-staffed, people leave every month, people get laid off all the time, and the pay just doesn't make up for the stress. It's making me seriously question if I should stick with this entire field. Does it ever get better, or is this just how it is everywhere?

In all seriousness, you're not burnt out. You're just working for a cr-ppy company. It happens. It will get better if the company culture changes or when you get a new job.

@py AI is just a facade for offshoring to low labor cost countries like India and Philippines. OP - seek employment in industries and careers where offshoring is not possible or easy. Then go after hard to automate type of jobs.

Depending on your role, good chance you
will no longer have a spot at the bank in 5-10yrs. With all the advances with AI it’s something you need to seriously consider since you are starting your career.

This is the 3rd large bank I have worked for.
Need to job hop to receive any significant pay increase for newly acquired skills.
Unless you generate revenue, you are just a cog in the wheel.
This was the best bank to work for by far, until GK took over. Working at Citi was a dumpster fire, GK has achieved that here in less than a year.

@g4 this is the take. Build skills. Do everything you can to gain knowledge, and figure out what won't drain your soul. So what you need to do to keep income, and while you're doing that look for something that isn't this place.

Don't let the miserable boomers, rule followers, and karens tell you to just accept, "this is what work is like" unless you want to be as grumpy and dead inside as they are by the time your in your 30s. Start chasing something fulfilling now. It will only be harder the longer you put it off.

"Does it ever get better, or is this just how it is everywhere?"
Since you gave absolutely no context about what role you are in, this is very difficult to answer to help you. The bank has countless roles across many different professions.

Change the conditions.

Anyone new to the bank needs to use two years to build your resume. Obtain the skills other companies will pay for. Every moment after two years is miserable. You need to leave and find a good company to work for. No one ever comes back. No ex-employees ever miss working here.

It's called work for a reason. Get used to it.
