Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Can BNY disclose reasons for termination to new employer (also a bank)

Hi, all. I was wondering if BNY discloses reasons for termination to a new employer (also a bank) during the background check. I was told that legally previous employer can only share / verify dates of employment and title. But is there a possibility of this information being shared whether it's by phone or some type of system? Thank you.

Nope, they can only confirm the dates of employment along with the corporate title like VP/svp. I was laid off last year and did not have any issues with background checks

I when I meet with recruiters outside of BNY, they know about BNY actively cutting staff. It's been my experience most recruiters assume you are ex-BNY through a layoff.

The recruiter will ask, "why did you leave BNY?" I say, "I was part of a 10% staff reduction during 2025." Recruiter will reply, "this is what I thought."

If you are lucky, you will meet ex-BNY as a recruiter or hiring manager and they will say, "BNY su-ks," "I'm glad I no-longer work there," "BNY had awful leadership," "BNY is a failing firm," or the classier, "I have nothing good to say about BNY."

I noticed in my area, ex-BNY are pretty common to come by in recruitment.

Legally, no. But since we know that BNY has only the most upstanding members in HR and management, I wouldn’t say it’s a safe bet that other conversations don’t happen. Especially if it’s with a competitor. It wouldn’t benefit BNY to say you got fired for X,Y,Z but those types of conversations do happen

No. The verification is done through. Third party that has your precise start and end date. So just get the two dates aligned.

A former colleague fudged the end date (in May) to August and failed validation on this stupid reason.

If someone calls the HR line they will be told termination date and can be asked if you are eligible for rehire. That’s not to say the industry is not a small world. Someone knows someone who knows someone can easily find a person who knows you and may or may not speak “off the record”. Good luck.
