Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

What is the point in getting "feedback" from employees?

Every year around November, managers ask for a list of names for "feedback." I have no issues coming up with names who will give a solid review but like, what purpose does this even serve? I give names of those whom I have a good relationship with and work with often so it's easy for me - I had 3 managers and 3 sr advisors on my list this past year.

But then I get requests for feedback on someone whom I literally NEVER talk to nor work with more than once/year at the very most. Not to mention I got one from my director/manager whom I also barely know lol.

I always give amazing reviews to everyone but, wtf is the purpose of these? I feel like the majority of people will always give good reviews, even for those who don't deserve them.

Interesting responses. Managers have the ability to request feedback from anyone - even those names you didn't submit. I get several of these every year for people being targeted for PIPs or WFR. Managers know we all cherry pick our peer feedback and use that to get honest feedback to justify actions.

fosters a false Illusion that the drones matter, to make you work harder thinking "IT WILL GET BETTER SOON"

@d9 yeah, i assumed that is likely the case. before the whole sr.manager "flattening" that took place last March, my previous manager always did EOY reviews or whatever - or mid year reviews, idfk. fiscal years get me all confused lol - but my new "manager/director" never asked for them nor gaf about them. Previous manager said nobody looks at them anyways.

There is no point. Your manager is just checking a box. His manager is just checking a box.

Its funny last year my performance discussion happened before we discussed peer review and manager feedback. I don’t think it considered at all for promotion. Totally depends on whom your manager likes😜

Its just mindless checkbox management.

I found out responding to those feedback req is optional. So i stopped giving feedback

many years ago I asked my manager at the time what my rating was, (meets expectations/exceeds expectations etc). I was told that since the Dell merger, people were no longer being given ratings like that anymore. I asked how pay rises were awarded then if there was no measurement and subsequent rating of my work? I got a non-answer.
Since then I write my self assessment in 10 minutes with very little effort. I nominate a few names for feedback as I am asked to and give it no further thought. I could write war and peace about efficiencies/improvements I have created etc but why bother? It makes no difference especially now when many "managers" no longer have any kind of relationship with you let alone understand the work you do. I take my annual rise, doff my cap and work according to the amount they chose to pay me. You DO get what you pay for!
I put the same effort into giving feedback. Praise where its due but that is all.
