I really want to be a VP or SVP. I’m currently an L5 and just started a couple months ago. People are telling me to do a lot of GTKYs and that it can get pretty political. Is this true? Any advice?

ACTUALLY GO TO OFFICE AND WORK!
If you are motivated go getter who goes into the office, you will fly up the ladder.
If you sit at home so you don't pay daycare and the world centers around what your perception of work life balance heavily skewed against the work part, you go nowhere.
Nobody is paying you to do laundry, walk kids to bus stop, etc.

You didn't tell us your race, gender, political party. That answers like 90% of your question. Either way, just be really bubbly and happy all the time, and learn how to lie with a smile. You'll do fine.
You’ve got a loooong way to go. Things are going to change. Focus on moving from L5 to L6.
50% GTKY & 50% FFF while 120% doing your normal job. Sprinkle on relentless peer review/feedback. Yes. You have to kiss the rings and su-k a-s with every peer of yours. You have to be 90% better than your peers to get internally promoted. Just leave and come back. You get one alibi if you stay in good graces.
Quit and go elsewhere. It’s not happening.
