@kw If you are providing value you are likely safe. Centene tends to target historically high performers who have reached the top (or near top) of their salary ranges. New graduates are much less expensive.

@11e I am a supervisor for Sunshine and was told coldly last week that I was being laid off. We were told 13 supervisors and 37 staff were being laid off. Management read from a script and gave no apologies or shown any emotion. Severance was given based on time at the company. Beginning of Feb is the last of our employment. State Contracts were lost so no need for employees in certain lines of businesses.

@11e Sorry to hear that. I’d guess you definitely won’t be the last one.

I am a supervisor with Sunshine Health in Florida and was notified I was being laid off last Thursday, with my last day in Feb. Quite a few supervisors/staff in my department were given their notice.

@wj Everyone will likely have a job at first. After some time, it will become apparent there is duplication and/or over staffing in certain roles. This is when layoffs will occur

@p1 exactly, they let go so many of my friends in may 2020 during covid...after that nothing surpises me. just go with the flow and do your best.

@kw Don’t feel nervous. At the end of the day, they are going to do what they want to do. Just show up, do the best you can, make yourself as valuable as you can, and learn as much as you can. That’s all you can really do. Centene does have extensive learning opportunities in the University or whatever they are calling it these days. Dive in and take advantage of it. Besides staying busy will help keep your mind off of everything else you can’t control

@ja Fear Mongering 101. What the HE-L are you talking about? Make yourself valuable and you wouldn’t have anything to worry about

In what area of the company are the layoffs expected to occur? I just graduated and got hired after interning with them last summer, and now I feel nervous about layoffs

If it makes you feel better, I believe we are in a true paradigm shift which will see massive economic upheaval and social unrest for most of the developed world. Working here is no better or worse than anyplace else.

“ If a manager RIFs a role, they are not allowed to fill it or a similar role for 12-18 months.”

but they did it? they walked around changing title a little bit but actually it is the same role

How do you know everyone will be notified of layoffs Thursday January 15th? Inquiring minds would like know.

January 15 is notification day.

The company has quarterly RIF cycles. It’s not a reaction to anything, just a standard business procedure - especially for a company as large at Centene. All companies should be constantly evaluating resources and making sure the roles they have are the roles they need.

That’s not to say managers don’t take advantage - I’m sure some do at times. But I also know HR and legal review every RIF request and vet them, and they have been known to challenge and deny submissions. If a manager RIFs a role, they are not allowed to fill it or a similar role for 12-18 months.

@aq I completely agree with this. It’s still a very fluid/volatile situation. We still don’t know if there’s going to be a compromise on the subsidies and what that may look like. Politically speaking, if the Democrats win the House in November that may blunt some of the negatives as well. Or maybe not, lol. And then what will AI look like this time next year? The only thing certain in this industry is change.

Unless the company finds areas of growth OR interest rates drop (and companies can borrow money on the cheap), I would expect intermittent layoffs for the foreseeable future.

If your state lost a contract, I would especially expect layoffs relative to state + sector.
